Hello Unity I would like to know one thing. Is Unity 3d Hard?In my opinion its not because most of the stuff for your game you can just buy them and not put in alot of effort. Also in my opinion its more of a time consuming thing then more of the game engine being hard.Is this the easiest game engine or is there another one out there? If so,could anyone please tell me what it is?
Yes and no.
Unity is definitely easier than building your own game engine. But it’s also not the easiest system to use. GameMaker, Stencyl, and Construct are all easier to use than Unity. However, as your game gets larger, those three packages become more and more restrictive, making your game harder to develop over time.
Unity is a pretty good “middle ground”.
As for buying things off the store, yes, the store is useful. But most of the time, it’s not as simple as buying stuff and dropping it in. You usually have to write some glue to make it work with the rest of your stuff.
Yes, making games with Unity is hard.
But the answer is a bit more complex than that. Making games is hard to begin with. There are many ways to build a game that are much harder than Unity: using a more AAA engine like Unreal or attempting to build your own engine, for example. There are several ways to build a game that are easier than Unity, too: with Game Maker or Game Salad, you’ll have something moving much faster than Unity, but you’ll hit walls when you do more complex games; with RPG Maker, you basically have a Final Fantasy clone built in a few clicks.
In my opinion, Unity is the perfect balance of flexibility and development speed. But if you don’t know what you’re doing yet (and nobody does when they start) and you’re not extremely passionate about programming, it may not be the best option.
One more thing: if you want to make a 3D game, there’s nothing easier than Unity that will make something decent.
oh so its like a bittersweet answer…Im Destined to learn unity because im trying to make a fighting game similar to dragon ball z raging blast.so i wounder if unity would be good for that. But i see there might be tough times making the game but i’m going for it.
oh i see…so its hard but its rewarding. The reason why i asked is because there are thousands of tutorials online with unity and i was thinkign if watch those it will make me learn unity faster and it would make the game im trying to make easier. Also the game me and my friends are trying to create is a fighting game similar to raging blast. But i guess i got lot to learn from unity.Thank you for telling me what lies ahead in learning unity
oh my god! you killed kenny! you bastard!
i don’t know whether or not unity is or is not hard, but let me tell you it’s definitively not soft ![]()
happy holidays!
That sums it up nicely.
I would suggest not spending a massive amount of time with available tutorials. There are way too many that are repetitive, incorrect or just done by people who may not really have any more skills than you. Its amazing how many tutorials are done by people using unity for the first time themselves.
Try to stick to ones that are done by respected sources, and focus on the ones that solve your specific needs/questions. Information overload can be as much of a challenge as not enough information.
Good luck.
It is and it isn’t. Unity 3D has a very graceful learning curve (thanks to its age and the multitude of tutorials on the internet) when you compare it to the other engines out there. For example you can’t expect to pick up CryEngine and start cranking content like you can in Unity. CryTek doesn’t streamline their engine like UT does.
Basically its not a case of “hard and easy” but more a case of what you need from your engine. If you want to learn by delivering content then yes, without a doubt its the best mainstream engine for you. Don’t be fooled by the shiny shit that UDK and CE3 have to offer, those are the trade off for a complicated engine to develop and publish with unless you are a large studio with the 40 grand or so you will need to invest in research and development.
Good luck!
Making a bad game is easy.
Making a good game is hard.
The engine is ± x of difficulty onto that.
^This.
It really depends on what you need, but in my experience Unity really is the easiest option out there. Good luck!
+1 …and, like theduck wrote; dont be fooled by the all shiny shit other engines can do.
One another thing; dont be fooled by all things you can get from Unity Assetstore; its not just “get all you need, and press OK”. I love Asseststore, and all things you can get from there, but if you like to make a game without compromise, you have to learn how to modify the assets, no matter what engine you use.
i’am not sure if Unity is easiest one to learn …i tried once again udk few weeks ago. Not thebad, easy to understand ui, and other basic stuff …but couldnt find much tutorials. I need tutorials. I cant use all my time to just figure out how to use the engine… after all, i just want to make a game. Unity has the best community; lot of tutorials …written (forum, blogs, …) and vids (youtube, vimeo, vids by Unity), and lots of question answered; qa / active forum.
Just saying …no matter what engine… you have to learn to use it… and community and all, makes Unity …not easy, but fast to learn.
How can you not find tutorials on UDK? There are lots, and there are a lot more high quality tutorials for UDK than there is for Unity.
IMO simple as this, easy to learn / difficult to master.
And yes there is an absurd amount of tutorials for UDK…
Actually it all depends on how much time you are dedicating to “learning” Unity (or anything for that matter). Unity is accessible (Free) and there are plenty of good tutorials/books out there to get you started. A reliable and good starting point is here:
Fair enough… to be honest, i actually did found many tutorials about UDK. To be more accurate, i did not find much of tuts about coding. Please, feel free to drop some links, if you know any?
Yeah, my statement was stupid, sorry about that. I did not think about coding. There aren’t a whole lot of UnrealScript resources out there. The one I think of is this one: UnrealScript Eat3D class, I have not taken it however so I don’t know the quality.
Is Unity hard?
It depends on how much time and effort you take into learning Unity.
It is similar to learning how to play a guitar. You can master the basics, play the guitar casually. To become a rockstar, you need to spend time practicing with your band. Otherwise, if you go on stage without practicing, you will get boo’ed and jeered out. Fans will want a refund…
