Is Unity Pro worth its asking price?

Hi everyone, I was looking at unity pro’s features. They sound pretty good but are they really worth $1,500?

simple answer: ‘yes’

i’m setting up the mechanics now that should allow me to purchase it late next year, its so worth it the mind boggles

In relation to what?

I would say that if you want to make games relatively easily and target quite a few platforms, then I would say that it is probably worth it.

I too am probably going to sell bits and bobs to be able to afford the pro license eventually. I’ll see how that goes once I know more about the ins and outs of Unity. I’m still a noob.

It’s worth it only if you’re going to use the features. It isn’t only the eye candy you’re paying for.

With unity pro you’re more or less given a giant tool set with which to employ yourself or realy invest your passion where you can be reasonably certain of your vision being feasibly realised. Money well spent if you ask me.

I think some ‘eye candy’ things slide into gameplay things, certain image effects, render to texture etc. But just things like the profiler, stuff like that puts you in a great position.

Everybody should just answer this kind of questions with a yes or no.

Yes.

Only you can really answer that. Others can tell you if it was worth it for them, but you’re the only one who knows what you want to do with it.

You don’t need Pro for that.

What? Its not a yes or no question. It 100% depends on your budget and if you need the features.

I think its a good idea to get in a real mood for games making, where you know you’ll put a bunch of time into it, then give your 30 day unity pro trial a go and work your butt off, then see what unity basic is like afterwards. And still be pretty damn certain you want to make games and use unity to do it with

Yes.

+1 if you never going to create a game with the pro features it does not worth. Let’s say you gonna create simple android or ios apps, so the free version with the proper ios and android license is all you need. So unity worth the price if you need that features.

i disagree with comments like that, i can think of quite a few features, not-graphics orientated, that make a massive difference to any project. in fact mobile games more than anything rely heavily on performance considerations and pro’s all about making that controllable

Very yes.

Yes, although it gets quite expensive for a hobbyist if you’re supporting multiple platforms. If you think you’ll earn more than you spend, then multiple platforms becomes very cost effective.

To be a bit more specific what features make Unity Pro worth getting?

native code, the profiler, umbra, realtime shadows, getting render depth information, rendering to target, gi with beast (i find it pretty useless without, thus far, sorry to say), image effects, asynchronous streaming and asset packages (is that what the are called? being able to grab extra chunks of assets from the internet anyways), some really incredibly useful classes although thank god they put GL into basic for 4, i always found it a bit silly making that pro only previously, video, sockets, i could go on, and on, and on

Static batching, Screen FX, Render to texture, Refraction/Reflection shader, realtime shadows, Occlusion culling, Lightmapping with light probes and GI, just to name a few.

That depends on your game.

Sure it’s worth it, especially if you get it nearly for free. “How do you get it for free?” you ask, it takes a bit of work and time but you can use their Asset Store to your advantage. Make something you think other people would like and then sell it. I made about $600 on the store over the course of a few years before I finally decided to buy Unity Pro. Although it helps to have a part-time/full-time job too.

I just wished Unity had a system set up so people, especially younger people, can sell stuff on the store and have it go towards a special Unity Pro fund or something. When they reach $1500 it unlocks the Pro version.
