Is Unity SpatialOS viable ?

I recently discovered SpatialOS and it seems promising but whenever I google for “Unity SpatialOS” all I can find is links to the license dispute they had this January 2019 which seems to be solved but still… Aside from that, the conversation seems dead and I can´t find any more tutorials or references to it.

So do you think Unity is still working on the compatibility with SpatialOS and is it still worth it to develop in SpatialOS or do is it too risky or not worth it?

What are you referring to when you say “compatibility”? Because if you’re referring to licenses then that’s been resolved.

Personally I just wouldn’t get involved with a company that isn’t a licensed Unity partner for something of that scale. When you do things along the scales they promise, you really want them to have close engine ties.

And they don’t.

Unity really didnt have a good history of supporting their networking solutions.
I would personally pickup something on github with good review or other that have been here for years like photon/smartfox server

Yeah Unity recommends photon or forge on their blog if you cannot wait for the new networking. I’ll wait for now, we’ll see. If it’s too expensive for me I can’t obviously.

To be fair their networking solutions were always made out to be for learning purposes to show you how you can build one and not meant to be used in actual games. At least that’s how they always presented the HLAPI or whatever it was called.

And I’ve always heard it was very limited and very finnicky even with the changes the community made to improve it.

I’m willing to be shown how to make multiplayer games the Unity way but Unet only showed me an ill-maintained fluster cluck that spewed out allocations non stop and ran like garbage.

I will give Unity another chance with the up coming DOTS networking sample, and if that doesn’t work out I guess it won’t work out, and there’s still 3rd party.

But… here’s hoping and I am a bit of an optimist so why not?

Viable for what?

What sort of game are you building?
