I’m a bit astounished that unitiy offers only one standard arial font, and that only in one size …
so my next idea would be to simply import some fonts from my windows folder …
the question is:
Am I allowed to do that?
I mean, there must be a reason why unity doesn’t use the fonts of the user’s system by default.
Are there any licensing issues, or is it okay to import the standard fonts from the windows folder if
windows is the target platform ?
as far as im aware your allowed to with a standard windows license. You have probally noticed if you use tools such as photoshop all of your windows fonts are available and people commercially release photos all the time. But if your still unsure probs best to send an email to customer support at microsoft
You can use it at whatever size you want; unlike bitmaps, vector fonts have no inherent size. There’s bazillions of free fonts easily downloaded, so I’m not sure there’s any point in Unity including any.
Perhaps because there’s no guarantee that the fonts that are on your system when you design your game will be on the user’s system when he installs your game…
If you import and use any font, you’ll effectively be redistributing that font when you distribute your game. I believe the fonts bundled with Windows are provided under a quite liberal license, but I certainly wouldn’t rely on it allowing such usage. As Eric said, there are plenty of fonts available that are specifically free to use; using those avoids any legal concerns (provided you get them from a reputable site, where you can be sure of the license terms).
Distributing an image with a caption on it is not the same thing as re-distributing the font used in the caption… Fonts, as any digital art asset, are protected by copyright and used under license. What you can and can’t do with them is a function of that license.
If in doubt, don’t use it. Unless you know the licensing terms, you shouldn’t assume you have any rights of use, especially rights of distribution.
Last time we checked the problem with Windows fonts was that you’re allowed to use them, but not to distribute them. You always distribute fonts (as textures) in Unity. This goes well as long as your app only runs in Windows (at least there people can’t tell). But as Unity is crossplatform, shipping Windows fonts to the Wii or Mac means trouble, assuming MS finds it worth the effort to sue. But you know those rogue lawyers scuttling the internet…
