Hi,
I have Unity on my mac (the black macbook) and my PC (a Tecra M10). Unity runs on my mac, until I try to import a 3D model. For .max files I get an error saying something about OS X (sorry, I can’t remember, and now when I try to drag and drop the .max file it just goes back to the project bar). For Maya files I get “Maya not found”.
Unity won’t open on my Teca M10 because the video card isn’t good enough, so I can only use my mac.
I’ll be using 3Ds Max files the most, so how do I import 3Ds Max files into Unity with my mac? If there’s no direct way to do it, then how would I change the file type so I could?
Thanks.
You have to have maya installed for maya files to get imported! I think Unity Team said that .max importion only worked on windows(but I am a bit bonkers and might have imagined this
).
If you want to use 3ds max files it will probably be easiest to export as an fbx or 3ds file.
Sucks about the bad computer! I got a new computer recently because I wanted a good pixel shader graphics card and my old one was a model from 2003.
Hey, thanks for the response! I’d really rather not buy another software. Can O change the filetype to something I can import on my mac?
I’m new to the whole 3D scene (no pun intended), and I’m more of a coder than an artist, so I buy per model. I really need to find a way to convert the models into a working filetype, I’m pretty sure this is possible but I don’t know how.
Ditto!
I would recommend pirating 3dsMax but that’s illegal so don’t do it.
The cure for pirating is asking the maker of the model to convert it for you because you bought it and deserve customer care
. There are no converters for .max to anything unless you actually have the software to begin with so that is kind of annoying.
Apparently if you run Maya in trial mode it’s still enough for Unity to use it to export Maya files, but I haven’t tried it.

That makes sense, considering that all the necessary dll files are still there and the code is run by unity not maya so there is no block.
Actually, Maya lets you use the command line interface without activation (which is what Unity uses to export files behind the scenes). You should be able to use the trial version of Maya indefinitely to let Unity deal with native .mb files.
can Maya open max files? because if it can, you could save those max files as Maya and then your good to go.
no maya uses mb / ma files.
max files require 3DS max
Can I convert a .max to a fbx file without owning 3Ds Max?
Well, you can install the 30-Day Trial version of Max (on a Windows machine) and do it for 30 days. Convert it to a format that suits you better.
There’s no .fbx converter or anything? Wow, that really stinks.
So far I know that .fbx files work, will .obj work? What other 3D filetypes will work?
Thanks
