Itch.io officially no longer allows Paypal as an option if you’re using Direct Payments (i.e. if the dev gets money directly and immediately rather than waiting one or two (or more) weeks for Itch.io to pay it out). I had planned on using direct payments, but the lack of Paypal is probably going to significantly reduce my revenue I assume. My question is: if I switch to the other payout option, how long does it take for Itch.io to pay out money when you request it, and how crucial is it to allow Paypal?
Paypal accounts for like 95% of my sales, so uh… You might want to keep that around.
How long, on average, does it take Itch.io to pay out money when you request it? Their guidelines say that only purchases at least a week old can be paid out, but how long does it take them to actually pay it out?
It takes seven days after completion for a payment to be available for payout, and then you can request said payout. From there it can take upwards of two weeks to actually get paid (and sometimes you have to write to remind them by straight up asking for the payout asap, and even then it can take several more days). That’s the one kink in itch.io that drives me batty (when using held payments). You quite literally never know when your payout is actually going to come through.
With that said, I like itch.io and hope they continue to succeed.
Yes, that’s why I wanted to use direct payment, but the lack of Paypal makes it senseless. I suppose at least Itch.io usually pays the money sooner than Steam, which only pays once a month.
Is there a way to offer a discount for people who purchase through direct payments rather than PayPal?
Only by lowering the price for everyone. Each game can only have one price level.
.
I remember us discussing this. Did you ever contact someone at itch about it? I still don’t understand how I am doing Direct payment using paypal. It has two options on that page for me.
I guess what I don’t understand is even if it is because I have had an account and PayPal set up there for years as a Buyer why would they make it so a huge number of people can still use PP direct payment and all people joining after a certain date cannot?
See what I mean? What are they gaining from it if a lot of people are still using direct PP anyway. That is what doesn’t make sense to me.
I got an email from their support staff saying that they no longer allow Paypal with Direct Payment. I don’t know why you’re able to do it (maybe you should keep that secret…) I assume it’s just a carry-over from the older system that used to allow it, or it’s a glitch.
This is an old thread and now incorrect.
From a message in 2020 itch states “Starting today, all account can use “Direct to you” with PayPal once again!”

Not on my watch!
In all seriousness though, thanks for the update, great news for any interested I am sure!
