Just a new guy, saying hello.

Hi there, Been in game design for a while now and looking to expand my skill set. I am learning slowly to build up my ability and understanding of c# as a scripting language and want start posting and see who else might be on the same position. Currently finishing a non gaming diploma in I.T. and I am hoping it will be possible to submit a unity based project as part of my pass requirements. I am working through various tutorials both from Unity’s own resources but also the ones offered by Catlike coding etc. There is no single aspect of coding I want to specialize in, but I do want to understand the relationship between the specialties required to create games as best I can.

So like I said hi there people. See you online.

just so you k now I come from a copy-writing and editing background. My reasons for wanting to program c# comes from a need to communicate effectively with technical people and code a few ideas I have had for interfaces and controlling the character.

If I had one question to ask, and I would be very grateful for the answer is: Is anyone prepared to mentor a part qualified junior programmer like me, to help me get to a level where I could conceivably be a candidate as a junior unity programmer. If that’s not possible, just some tips about how to spend my time effectively and how to go from simple function based scripting to something as complex as implementing a design pattern for use in multiplayer 3D gaming
Thanks for any help and support.

Hi Cainebog,

I can’t really answer these questions effectively as I’m a noob game develop… plus my background come more from systems support than coding - so I’m learning a lot on the fly.

However, one thing that I have learnt is that the “Learn” section of this site is invaluable. It runs through loads to do with what methods and functions are available in the unity libraries(?) and how to implement certain techniques. There are also some written pages to do with coding practices - although I have a feeling you’re already used to this

As for mentoring I’m not sure what to say. I’m in a position where I have LOADS of free time, but very little in the way of energy and mental processing ability (CFS/ME) - not to mention usable knowledge, and many others are in fulltime work… so they’re the opposite. However I CAN say that, from experience, any question posted here will get looked at and 99% get answered in one way or another. Plus there’s an old proverb that says “There is accomplishment through many advisors” - bounce some ideas around

Hope this has helped… I’m always worried that I muddy the waters a lot, so I hope I haven’t done that, lol.

Welcome aboard. Finding mentors is tough. Unless you are willing to pay for it. But feel free to hang around and participate in the conversations. You will learn new things this way.

This made me laugh.
