Hey everyone . I just want to share an idea about something that would be kind of fun in the future of Unity. I thought about how people would strengthen their skills in Unity because sometimes I feel “lonely” when doing my projects. And the effort that goes into unfinished projects always feel worthless.
But what could be fun is some sort of Unity “Cup” . Maybe give users the chance to participate in teams of 5 or 10 (or even a “solo” cup at times. ) And then split the teams up into beginner, normal and expert teams. They would then be given a theme, game tipe, etc and have to complete a game in 2-3 weeks.
It would be fun to join such a “rush” . On the downside I can see there is a lot of things that won’t work. Like the whole judging and voting could get really messy. And there could be users cheating . And many users would ask for a prize of some sort. But I think the prize would be good practice. (If someone is willing to give prizes that would be good.but it could only be money because of shipping)
But this is just an idea. How do you see something like this working? Can it be done in a fair way and last . Even if I didn’t join such a competition it would be kind of fun to read daily news about what team has “ranked up” or which team won the “low polly post apocalyptic challenge” lol. Just like reading sport on the internet. Just want to get your opinion thanx for reading
I would actually like to see this happen. Back in my youth… so sad, I was on a boardgame forum that did something similar.
They would present a theme (the one we competed in was “Doomed Civilization”). Contestants would interpret the theme as they saw it (always trying to think of creative ways to interpret it). The admins of the site, as well as some well-known boardgame developers, would play the various games then post a rating on a specified forum.
They would give a rating for presentation, creativity, etc., and critique each category separately, then give the average of the ratings at the end of the post.
Also, I think Unity is famous enough that saying you’ve won the “Unity Cup” (or whatever) would be a great prize.
P.S. I know you’re all dying to know. No… our boardgame didn’t win
Lol too bad you didn’t win but atleast you participated. It sounds fun what you did with the boardgames. I guess being competitive is a big motivation helper in competitions
Unity does have contests from time to time, but its typically just to test out and advertise their new features. We entered their last contest, Flash in a Flash, to show off/test their build to Flash feature. My team amazed me when they pulled together and built a game from design to release in a single week.
Still, I would love to see a regular contest, and I would love to see the various ideas coming out of the various themes.
Wow congratulations to your team!. A week is very little time to pull together a working game. I’d also love to see some contests because I need as much practice as I can get. And this would make all noobs like me learn other designers and programmers
