Hello everybody, my name is Michael and I recently joined the forums. It’s my habit to always say hello and give an introduction whenever I join a forum, and this seems to be the thread to do it in.
Anyway, in short, I’m a web developer and programmer. Unlike a lot of the new people who come to Unity (it would seem) I have a very logical, programming kind of background. I work with languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and SQL in my web development. I also work with Flash a lot and have a good knowledge of ActionScript. I also know some Python and Java.
I have an interest in game development, but only as a hobby, therefore I can’t spend a huge amount of time learning the engine I’m working with. I tried UDK but it just didn’t fit me. But after checking out Unity for a while, I knew it had the right style for me. Given my background, I’m not scared of scripting that’s for sure, it’s just a new API.
I’ve joined the forums because by reading some of the posts, I can see that this is a friendly community from which I will be able to benefit.
Looking forward to talking more,
Michael
You’ll be well suited here. Working with Unity is like working with a beefed up flash 10/11 API. You really should be comfortable here if you worked in AS3 at all. Moving from AS3 to C# is a snap, after all, they did sort of model AS3 after the modern C language subsets.
I will also agree with you about UDK. It was nice, it was powerful, but god was it clunky. I puttered around in it for a few weeks before I finally realized that it was absolutely crippled by the scripting engine they used.
Welcome to the community!
Thanks for your warm welcome. Yes I’ve used ActionScript 3 a lot, and I must say I’m finding it really comfortable in Unity (scripting included). I’m actually using JavaScript right now, it’s a syntax I already know, therfore I chose it.
I fully agree with you there, although I never got into the scripting side of it. In fact I could do more with Unity in a few days than I could with UDK after a few weeks.
Thanks for the welcome! By the way thanks heaps to the people at Unity for this awesome product.
P.S. Forgive me if I’m using English in a non-proper way, I’m typing this on my iPhone while walking on a treadmill, lol.
