Kart game demo - webplayer

Messing around with car physics once more.

Try the WildKart and tell me what are your feelings about it. Many elements are very raw at this moment, still working in models and menus.

You have three cameras, one follow camera, one on-board (my favorite) and one slightly to the right of the driver for demo purposes (see attached pic).

This one is very close to a simulator that means you must use brakes or you’ll end out of the track easily.

In this one I’m interested mainly in the visual quality because I’m using realtime shadows in the player’s car and fake shadows for the rest.

The controls appear in a GUI text, but there are additional controls:

T: slow motion
I: player car AI
R: restart when stuck

Only take care in the first menu, I noticed that sometimes the webplayer loose focus and you cannot write your name if at full screen, so fill the name space before.

I want also make an announcement, I’m preparing a Car Tutorial and project to share with the community including Basic Car AI.
Without you I never could do it.

Thank you all, and enjoy

Great look and overall a nice feel to it. My two issues were that the controls were just a bit too sensitive and twitchy for my tastes and hitting the tire walls shouldn’t send me bouncing backwards in a flip. Or maybe I just need to drive better… :stuck_out_tongue:

But damn, that’s lookin’ nice, kudos!

Good start but nothing like driving a kart, way too sensitive. Need more fine control.

I know MrSweet, I’m trying to get a balance with keyboard control. Of course it would be better to have analog control, but for web play the control must be good enough with keyboard.

Because I’m not a very good “driver” maybe I’m adjusting controls to mi like, so I need others feelling.

What do you think about the overall impression?, The stiffness is good?, How about braking?.

And of course “nothing like driving a kart”
Thank you

After playing a bit last night, I gave it another go this morning and think I actually sorted out how to get it to drive like I want. In general I tend to like driving games that let me slide and drift a bit, and in the karting world (with no limited slip differentials) that’s a huge part of the experience. After some practice I got it to do that for me and was able to drive rather well. So I guess my advice/thoughts on the matter are:

  • Can you make it a touch easier to get the kart to “slide” in the corners? That would add (at least for me) a touch of fun and let folks drive and negotiate corners faster (or so I think, I could be wrong :stuck_out_tongue: ).

  • Can you adjust the steering sensitivity a bit, and make it based on speed? When I’m going slow it should be more sensitive, when I’m going fast, less so. I say that as a few times while going fast I got myself into a very twitchy/swerving state.

  • Perhaps you should make the cart less “bouncy” when the player/kart runs into things? Too many times I’d hit a wall and the kart would bounce and flip, etc. While that ought to happen for truly high speed crashes and whatnot, it seemed to happen a bit too easily.

  • Perhaps a simpler track or a training area is in order? The track as is throws you into a situation where cornering is important and there are others around you. The resolution for now, that I used at least, was to let everyone else run off in front of me so I could sort out some driving on my own. A training area/simpler track might make it easier for folks to learn how the kart wants to be driven.

I definitely want to note that once I sorted out the driving a bit more the fun factor went up very nicely so I think that overall you’ve done a great job. Please don’t take the above to mean anything other than that!

You are right HiggyB, it’s possible to make the Kart easier to drive, but in my experience, Karts are very bouncy because the lack of suspension and difficult to control.

About drifting, actual karts run “glued” to the track until you reach the limit and then you loose total control and make a 180º turn on place, you still can do it in the demo, go straight to a curve and turn in the very last moment and see what happens.

I know it’s necessary some training level and it will be in the final release.

And the track selected for the demo is not an easy one, but is near the place I’m leaving and I’m begining contacts with them for some sponsorship, I posted a video of the demo with a split screen with the actual track to compare:

What I’m trying here and with my Big Project (The Web Drive Simulator) is to make vehicles of very different feelings, as close as reality as it can be while still giving fun. (Did you tried the Lowrider demo?). So each game is not for all gamers, but will be a game for each one.

Now I’m thinking in a game based in the Mad Max “philosophy”, maybe two cars in the same narrow road in opposite directions and avoiding each other in the very last moment.

Anyway, player’s comments are the best way to make a game better.

(Sometimesh I wish my english were better to explain things)

You need to have a version without realtime shadows, and then we’ll talk about the trippy speed shader thing. For me, at low framerates, it was impossible to drive. I couldn’t see through the shader.

Looks awesome otherwise.

The road is very beautiful

Very very nice! the graphics are great and a I actually enjoyed the driving since the 1st lap!
Congratulations and a keep us updated, i want to play more tracks!!

Sorry to bump this thread, but how did you make the detecting of outside the track?

cool job on this game dude! feels really real life
the graphics are also good!
only one thing i have noticed is that i could cut the way with no problem like just go from on road to another and it had no problem, also when i crashed into the wall my cart went to the other side of the map…
but still great job!

I loved the driving. But, IMO, i think you used too much blur.

I sucked so i drove backwards, hit a dude, and he flew off into the air…
LOL

I did like a triple backflip and landed right on coarse with the other driver lol… win
