There used to be a tool exactly like boner3d for FPSCreator, except it didn’t have individual fingers, but it had a rig and you simply fit your mesh onto the rig, it would guess and assign the vertices to the bones, and then would let you fine tune the verts or find any that weren’t assigned.
Looked on their site but don’t see it anymore and can’t remember the name, but it looks exactly like the video in OP.

The maker of this is Josh Klint. He is the developer and producer of the Leadwerks Engine and the owner/ceo of Leadwerks.
He is a gifted coder and an arrogant ol’ moo.
Arrogance aside when he sets his mind on a goal he gets there. I remember Leadwerks engine when it was first released and although a little quirky was Game Dev Ready. Looking at it now it has evolved in to something quite special.
Oh! Josh also developed CharacterShop. This I believe was his first attempt at Autorigging Software and he made a pretty good job of it. Oh! Character Shop when released, talking a long time ago here, was better than 80% of what was feasibly affordable for indies at the time i.e. it was a cheap tool that did a damn fine job compared to its expensive other AutoRiggers who’s price tags were tripple.
