Stumbled upon this at bobshouseofvideogames.com and I realized there is some serious potential here. The youtube video below shows just how well it interprets the motions of the person, making it seem like one of the cheapest solutions for possible motion capture.
There is one catch though, I could not find any links or article on Google of any software that records this data and allows you to import it into any major 3D app besides 3DS max(and that went by a different name) Any other solutions out there? Or ones that can do this and are compatible with Blender?
So perhaps I underestimated the kinect, but if these hacks continue to advance, we might find ourselves with the $150 USD motion capture system. That would save hours upon hours of my time. Has anyone else heard of this or know of such software? I would gladly shell out the cost of a Kinect if it can do this!
Using it for motion capture was the first thing that popped into my mind when the kinect was first presented. I’m kinda busy with some stuff till mid january but if noone else has it goin by then i’ll work on it =)
That’s an awesome video showing just what I wanted to see. I want that software. That would cut so much time out of animation.
Theoretically that should be able to work with other things as well. I wonder if anyone is working on this but with facial tracking? That would be another cool thing making it the easiest facial animation software ever, just use your face!
I have used a program called Brekel Kinect. This program recorded my motion, then I used BVH converter to move it into Iclone3. Now I am trying to figure out how to get it in unity. My biggest problem is that I do not know anything about Unity.
As mentioned, Brekel has developed a body and face motion capture system that streams to motionbuilder or can export to Maya/3dsMax/Blender etc and can then be brought into Unity. Workflow is a bit clumsy though if you try and operate both the computer as well as be the performer.
Alternatively a company called ZigFu (www.zigfu.com) allows you to do body motion capture just using Unity. They don’t have facial motion capture integrated yet, but I’m helping push them to integrate it.
