Learning project : Super Space Shooter 3000

Just “finished” a little prototype, while learning Unity and Unity iPhone. Thanks to this forum and the helpful people here, i never had problems finding a solution.

My focus was on the flight controls, using the accelerometer and combining that with a smooth targeting/crosshair system.

You start off a mothership and go hunting for evil red space raiders. The enemies don’t shoot back at the moment and have a very stupid ai, but i’ts fun to destroy them and fly around or land on the mothership again.

So if you would like to try it out, modify it or see how it was done (don’t look to close, i’m no programmer :wink: ), feel free to download the project files below and let me know what you think.

no problem. but as i said, i’m no programmer, so it is most likely patched together and not a good example of how you should code a game :wink:

Just did a quick test in Remote and Build as well.
Some observations:
When the ship is in acceleration you can’t aim or shoot. Also when the ship is flying slow if it hits a meteor the ship won’t crash (blow up) right ? It will bounce back.
Also some polygons of the player ship and enemy ships are reversed (transparent). (the bottom rear and under the wings).
Just testing this great game.

yeah, i disabled shooting in acceleration mode as a gameplay decision. i wanted it to be a “special turbo mode” and not just faster gameplay.

the ship should actually crash if either the impact velocity or the impact degree are in a not allowed range. (i wanted the player to be able to land on stuff if the speed was ok and the impact degree was not to far off. but that part is unfinished.)

and yes, the ship was done very quickly in blender. maybe i even used the version where i deleted unseen faces. i don’t remember at the moment.

Thanks for explaining the issues. It seams everything has been nicely planned. It’s a well polished game and the first thing that struck me seeing your unity structure (objects and script organization) that you work very clean and neat. Congrat again, and a big big thumbs up sharing the full code with us.
Are you planning on publishing a version of this on iTunes ? You should, you are far ahead, and it might as well make you a few bucks. Just a thought. Some great music for the background, different ships, different weapons and you are ready to go. Oh, you mentioned Blender. Did you make the ship and landing strip model, unwrap and UV mapping by yourself ?

seeing how much would need to be done and how much coding and mission stuff is inexistant, i don’t think i’ll continue on the game. also, there are already many good 3d space shooters in the store, with much more content than i could ever produce.

it was just a learning project, to get used to unity, the editor and establishing a basic workflow. it would need to much work to bring it up to a standard that i could stand behind.

and yes, all the blender models were rushed by me, in about 3 hours or so. thats why they look so bad :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah there are tons of space shooters out there, that’s true. Anyway it looks like as a study you did well, and established the basic workflow.
My blender-modeling-unwrap-uv-ing comment was intented as a compliment ;). It’s good that you have both art and coding experience. I am more in the modeling/texturing/animation field and getting you to the more sophisticated and complex coding.
Anyway, keep up the good work.

that´s not a good argument…
…there are tons of rpg´s, fps, racers, 3rd person shooters, strategy things, (action) adventures (ok, this genre is dying…) and many cobinations of every genre… so, who cares?:wink:
…be a hero and define a new genre;)
protecting the world from evil invaders, mages, wiches, old gods or dragons gets boring:smile: i know …what about a household game?^^
washing the dishes, cleaning up rooms…a fuck …sounds like sims :wink:
it´s almost impossible to create something REALLY new
