Learning Resources for Unity

Unity Technologies Provided
Unity Technologies provides some valuable learning material for you right out of the box by way of the product documentation. That documentation is installed with Unity and Unity iPhone, or it can be found online at the following URL:

Unity Documentation

Note: as of today the Unity iPhone documentation is only available by installing Unity iPhone itself.

Unity Technologies also provides some additional learning material in the Resources area of our website. These include tutorials, example projects, videos of all sorts, sample assets and more. All of that is available for free and is available at the following URL:

Unity Resources

Unity Technologies also maintains our company blogs, and in many posts we include videos that can often include valuable material for you to consider. You can read our blogs, and find our videos at the following URLs:

Unity Blogs
Unity Videos on Vimeo
Unity Videos on YouTube

3rd Party/Community Provided
In addition to all the material above there are 3rd party companies providing learning material about Unity. In particular, Noesis Interactive is providing courseware for Unity for educators as well as dedicated developer material for both individual customers as well as corporate clients. All of it is based on their great on-demand video material:

design3 (academic)
design3 (corporate)
design3 (developer)

And of course the community itself is an extremely valuable source of information. Members of the community help maintain the community wiki, others have written or are writing books and many others maintain their own tutorial sites, all are worth checking out.

The Unify Community Wiki can be found here:

Unify Community Wiki

Here are links for information about published books and magazines that focus on Unity:

Unity Game Development Essentials (book)
Unity 3D Game Development by Example Beginner’s Guide (book)
Creating 3D Game Art for the iPhone with Unity (book, coming Oct. 29, 2010)
Unity Creative (magazine)

Unity Game Engine (Playlist)

We’re maintaining a reddit.com page for Unity Tutorial materials and websites:

Unity Tutorials on reddit.com

If all else fails, Search!
If you go through all of the above and still aren’t finding what you need, or you’re just trying to find a more efficient way of searching relevant resource sites, then give Ben “RobotDuck” Pitt’s custom Google search a look:

Unity Reference Search Engine

In one search it combs the Unity site, the forums, Unity Answers and a bunch of other sites (including some community sites). Very handy, very useful.

How to Contribute
If you maintain or know of any learning resources that are not listed above that you think should be included in this post then please send a private message to me (HiggyB) and let me know so I can update this post, thanks!

It’s a good collection of learning resources.
Thanks a lot

Add my blog…(haaa…is a joke)

Good job~~ :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks a lot

Hey guys!
Do you think we could add either

www.tornadotwins.com’ or ‘http://www.youtube.com/tornadotwins’?

Both of these are completely dedicated to Unity learning and have thousands of unique views a day.

-TT

Did you add either of those to the Reddit page? That’s likely the best place to put them for now as that is a community driven on-going list of sites. Longer term we want something more formalized that this forum-based listing but get yourself submitted there too!

Just starting to learn Unity scripting and tutorials.

and this seems rather good information which i was after. thanks for the information.

Is there any tut for C# or GUI for this Unity how to use and make easy scripting and other things ??

check the tornadotwins videos on youtube… above its the link , i think tornadotwins.com, also the 3dbuzz unity tutorials at 3dbuzz.com

For the Germans there is:
http://www.unity-community.de

We are planning to translate the documentation, too.

I just added a pair of YouTube playlist URLs (courtesy of Demonith via the Teaching area of the forums, thanks yo!), the unity-community.de URL and the URL for The Unity Artist forums to my first post up top, thanks y’all!

Thanks it’s going to be useful for me

FWIW, I’ve updated the first post with some mild reorganization and the inclusion of a reference to the courseware materials that are being offered by the folks at Noesis (I also added them to the Reddit.com page). If folks have anything they’d like to see added to my post above then let me know, thanks!

Hey guys,
Can you add http://www.gamergfo.com

I have a forum setup and free tutorials/workshops

Thanks,
Jacob Griffith

Hi Tom,

an extremely useful tidbit every Unity user should have bookmarked is
Ben “Duck/Duckets/Robotduck” Pitt’s -

All in One Unity Reference Search Engine URL

Thank You Duck

Just curious,

Will the Unity be revamping the docs to fully reflect 3.0 on release? Particularly for new extensions such as Beast?

Obviously patch job release notes help folk assemble a clue how to use new features, but Unity has long considered documentation (not programming references which is fine), the ugly step child of their product offering.

My concern now is that Unity will shy away from fuller companion documentation and tutorials in lieu of their paid association with Noesis. On the iPhone side in particular, there’s only so much love one can draw from the unwieldy Penelope tut.

Hey folks, given that the last few posts have sat untended for too long and I had a few new links of my own to provide, I’ve updated my first post quite a bit. The update involves some reorganization, addition of news links, removal of some old/outdates ones and editing of some that have changed.

Done!

Done!

You bet! The documentation is getting significant improvements, those of course include updates related to new features but also a huge range of general improvements to the existing material. For example, every script example is now provided in C#, JavaScript and Boo, with a drop-down selector to toggle in between them! There are other changes too, but my point is this: we remain committed to providing quality documentation with the product itself, without reliance or dependance on external parties or relationships.

Noesis in a reseller of our software, they are one of many that do that around the world. Going beyond that, Noesis is a partner that’s producing additional learning material like tutorials and the like, but once again there are others doing that as well (Weltenbauer in Germany, Mirax in Taiwan, GPM in Korea, and so on). So yes, we’re developing relationships with external resellers and learning content developers, but none of that displaces our belief that we have to provide solid core documentation with the product ourselves. What should be clear is that these external folks are far more numerous than us and have more staff/resources that they can focus on things like tutorials and the like. So yes, you’ll see them outproduce us in terms of volume but that’s just a numbers thing, not a belief or commitment one.

I think we have a few valuable resources over at http://www.m2h.nl/unity

I could swear you asked me to include you once before and I thought I’d done that, my apologies. I’ve updated my post to include you, thanks!

Is there any videos for the ut3.0 feature? like how to bake in unity3d.Thanks!
