Hi everyone,
Might be some silly questions but I am very new to developing. I just wanted to ask with most of these tutorials are you fully able to get a good grasp from using the free version of unity, and then maybe if move on to the pro if you get to an advanced level. Basically can you get good learning out of the free version.
Also, is it possible to publish something to the web through flash, which won’t require a unity player to view. I.E simple game.
Quick answer or a kick in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks
Like I have read 3.5 final will not have Flash for free (it will be like iOS, android $400), also there are certain things that won’t be in 3.5 final basic like occlusion but the new Shurikken will be, I don’t know for sure maybe other people can answer this more clearly.
With the basic edition you can learn, the advanced edition is more like if you want a best look (or more realistic perhaps? Im not sure about that) in your game, but you can learn OK with basic… even more, I on first install it is installed like pro for a month, so you have 1 month. Also I will suggest buy basic instead of pro (on the iOS and android if you are going that way, for desktop it is free!), because you can always upgrade and $1500 if you are new are a lot for “only learn” and do some simple games.
On the other hand, yes you can use the basic edition to publish something to web via the unity-plugin browser.
Thanks for the reply and info! I’ll start with the basic edition and see how I go!
Good to know that the community is helpful, thats a plus in itself!
Thanks

Animare:
Welcome to the Unity Forums! If you are looking for a specific solution or have a question, try the Custom Search Engine listed in my signature. This is good as it is better than the forum search engine and includes other sites like the Wiki and Unity Answers. Otherwise, for general “Getting Started” material, tutorials and the like, follow the links in my signature to find more resources. If you cannot find what you are looking for, drop me a line and I’ll try to point you in the correct direction.
It seems that most of your specific questions have been answered. Look thru the tutorials listed in this section and let me know if there are any issues I can help you with.
Awesome thanks so much guys, definitely settling with Unity for now! Great community!
Will definitely check out the design 3 site and thanks for the search link!
Again, many thanks!
I personally don’t see much difference between “pro” and “free” from a dead newbies point of view grins…because I don’t understand enough yet to make use of the differences…even though I did buy an “1 year educational subscription” to pro, in the hopes of learning enough in a year to use those features to build something good enough to get the financing for “pro”
Ya Unless Im mistaken the primary differences are related to the quality of the final product and platform deployment. I may be wrong but it doesn’t seem like their are any programming limitations on the free version, but rather visual implementations. Each new version also seems to be making that more true. I think of all the tools out their Unity is really the most featured full version, at least as far as I can tell. I still very much consider myself a nub.
