Hi everyone. Recently i downloaded one of the soldier packs on the asset store for free. Real good work guys , thanks. Now my question is, i notice that although alot of these free chars came with rigs and small animation clips attached, i started doing a lot of work on expanding the Animations. Now, two questions i guess. Am i mising something or are they really free for commercial use as well? There was no read me attached, nothing saying to advertise them ya da da.
Secondly, is it fine for me to release the updated animations etc, or it infringing on the original creators work ? I kinda think it is, but there free? I dont understand the legalities of it all :(.
EDIT : I wouldnt be wanting money or anything either , forgot to say , jsut mean , updating them with more extensive animations would be nice , like all the soldiers i noticed , only had walk animations , not even idles.
I haven’t actually looked into it much, but I think it’s safe to say you can’t modify and rerelease any assets, for free or not.
Aight , well no worries i suppose , i just figured it would be nice if they had actual useable animations for those people that do not know how to do it themselves. Its nice that they released em with run / walk animations , but a character needs alot more than that in its animation cycles to be useable in game. Anyways thanks for the input.
I’d check if the Unity asset store has a standard agreement itself, if neither the package nor unity asset store come with any agreement then it is my understanding that it is ok to redistribute it however you see fit.
However, the polite thing to do is always to contact the original creator and ask them for permission and tell them your plans, most people are happy to have other people create content to complement their work.
if something does not come with an agreement the global and legal standard is that its under copyright and you aren’t entitled to do anything without written permission
To allow what you want to do with it, it would need to come with a waive disclaimer or a public domain notice
For asset store stuff, read the asset store license. If there is a license in the package, maybe you should read it too. But the Asset Store License is the official word on this.
