Less polygons equal more lag?

Hi, kinda new to unity and I am having a problem I can’t figure out.

I probably had too many polygons in my scene, which caused my animations to slow down a bit and caused the game to lag a bit as well. So, I decided I would delete a bunch of the characters in my scene to lower the poly count. I also deleted some point lights. Well, now the animations run even slower and it lags much worse. I had my friend take a look at it since he has been using Unity for a while, but he can’t figure it out either.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If you have Unity Pro, consider using the profiler.
It should tell you where the time is being spent and is a really good tool if you want to identify and fix performance issues.
