Let Me Tap Your Creativity - Sandbox Items

Hi guys,

so I’m tinkering with this sandbox project of mine. Modern urban environment, cars, weapons, you get the idea. I worked a long time to make the character, cars, weapons, itemsystem and craftingsystem work to make sure I have a stable core system that handles the components in the way I want them, and now it’s finally time to add polygons and color to the whole thing. But… It appears I spent all my creativity on the scripts and models of cars and weapons :expressionless:

Now the basic premise is to fill the world only with items that are functional. Lights that switch on and off, clocks that work, fire extinguishers that do their job instead of being decorative, etc pp… I can think of random boxes to store stuff, sure, flashlights, ropes to tow cars, random balls because that stuff lends itself by Unity’s features. But other than that… I draw blanks.

So help me out here guys, what items would you enjoy playing with in a sandbox context?

Jetpacks.

+1

Any game can be improved with addition of jetpacks and/or rocket launchers.

Radios, picture frames, refrigerators, bookshelves, sinks, toilets, garage door

Maybe some type of acid in a bottle and when it pours out, it destroys whatever item is under it?
Dunno, it would help knowing a bit more about what type of game this is, I know it’s a sandbox but that’s still pretty vague :P…

suit of armor

Well, if you really want to be specific you could put in subatomic particles. Other than that, pumps, water, cameras, crowbars, axes, hacksaws, etc.

Tractor Beam

I can’t believe I didn’t think of that. Rocket launchers are a given too ;D

Will do, done, done, done, done and done.

I have several reasons for not telling you guys too much. For one, I concentrated on mechanics to make sure the game is fun first, the items and story and whathave you I make up as I go, so I really don’t know where this is heading. Then I’m afraid that if I point you in one direction too much, we will end up with specialized items to fit that direction, instead of having truly random items you would find in a random world and just play with for the sake of playing and not accomplishing any specific goal. And thirdly, the game is currently nowhere near a state where it has the features I claim, so it feels very much like just making hot air since I can’t really show anything yet. Holding off on making a WIP thread too for now.

But since you asked- the character would live in some kind of city, based on the performance I’m getting more a small town/settlement with maybe 100 NPCs. I have cars, weapons and computers in the game so that puts us somewhere between 1970 and now. I am aiming at an “every day life simulation” like Jones in the fast lane, where you have to buy an appartement, food, get a job and commute to it daily. For lategame I’m preparing overpowered stuff that’s not really realistic- mechs, teleportation, godmode, stopping time etc. I hope that’s enough information for now

Hmm maybe not medieval steel kind of armor, but I agree some kind of at least bulletproof material, and more generally, clothing should be in.

Oh man you go straight to the big guns, eh? Subatomic particles make me feel like I would have to incorporate everything inbetween as well… I’ll have to think about where I can take this.

Pumps, water, the acid Justei mentioned… That’s something I would really love but I think to make that look good I’ll have to go and make a full on fluid simulation. Maybe at a later point in time when I have the skills for that :I

Cameras, all kinds of melee weapons. That, sir, I can do.

I was thinking about that when I was implementing the inventory and item carrying. Would be simple to create too. Noted!

Thanks so far guys, keep the crazy ideas coming!

Claymores, C4, TNT, Dynamite, a nuke, and a welding torch( to stick it all together obviously.) Various parts to build a full computer. Oooo, and if you build the computer, you can play mini games on it!
