Letter to Unity

Hello!

I feel a bit frustrated for 5 serious issues that you don’t seem to be addressing:

  1. mp3 files do not loop. Unity inserts something in the beginning of a file and at the end. Although this is something that any serious game developer will stumble over, it is simply not addressed for over 3 years now, I think. We can not distribute wav files because they are too big. So how should we handle a looping ambient sound?
  2. Mecanim is buggy. Feet are skating (easiest to be seen in an idle animation) although the animation is perfectly fine. Nobody of the newbie users complain because they do not notice it, so Unity does not care. I do. I don’t want to have feet whiggeling on the ground when they should stand still.
  3. No “serious-question-most-likely-a-bug” forum. With the current structure people either have to file a full bug report which requires much asking back and forth and requiring really much efforts from their users or they have to post in a forum where difficult questions are most likely not answered.
If Unity had a moderated forum where people could post bug reports that are in 50% of all cases real bugs and in 50% of all cases a user mistake, this would make everybody’s life easier. Experienced users could jump in to tell whether something is a user-mistake or if it might be a real bug.
The QA is a great idea, but most of the times more people are more helpful than just one person having to rule out everything by himself without feedback from others.
  4. No good AA. Although being such an import task, the roadmap does not reveal anything the progress.
  5. No news about the terrain engine update. On the roadmap you say “Under investigation”. Any serious game developer will consider this a feature that has to be on top of the todo-list.

Currently I feel that Unity is an engine for newbies, and once you try to create a real game, you are lost.
Basically because Unity does not address the above issues.

ps: The Asset Store needs a makeup. I don’t want to be shown anything I have ever downloaded or purchased. I want to be able to remove crappy assets. And your Update button does not work anymore since one of the Unity 5 minor version updates.

I rest my case.

There are many fine examples in Unity’s Showcase. Unity is definitely newbie friendly, but it’s good for professionals too.

Not the 20th terrain tools from the Unity asset store, please, we need something official.
@Ryiah You don’t refer to any of my issues, so your post is useless (oh, okay, you have already 3427 posts, so I guess that is just your way to say hello. You might like to use the “Like” button for that).
I will not argue about my issues anymore. Anything I had to say was said, and how Unity deals with this is their thing.
Thank you.

looks like hermie just wants to be rude to everyone ryiah.

I’ve had that same problem on iOS with a different engine. As far as I know that is not a unity limitation, it is a limitation in the mp3 file format. Check if unity gives you other options to compress wav files into a better format for final distribution.

No, I don’t want to me mean to anyone, but if somebody just posts “It’s all not so bad”, then I don’t feel taken seriously as somebody who wants to create a real game.

@Ryiah

  1. Yes, but if even the preview displays the mp3 with a fade-in and fade-out (which is not present in the actual mp3 file), you can assume that Unity does not care.
  2. Without any tweaks, my character’s feet are sliding, and that leads me to the assumption that Mechanim is broken (which I think it is, I have not posted my full list of flaws, I just wanted to push the designer at having a look at it again).
I am not talkig about the “foot sliding” here. I am talking about undesired feet movements while they should stay still on the ground.
Try it yourself with Kubold free animation set. Are your feet wobbeling (not still on the ground)? Yes, they are with Mechanim.
Check it out in Maya or any other animation software. Are the feet wobelling? No, they aren’t.
  3. I disagree due to experience
  4. Yes, they did that but the release date is unknown, so serious game designers can not count on it
  5. I know, but the roadmap says “Under investigation”, so I guess they will let years pass, hoping people will rely on 3rd party assets. But I don’t want to switch the system again in some time. I need ANY approximation of a date and some information about if the old terrain will automatically be upgraded.

It’s hard to take you seriously when you say nonsense like “Unity is an engine for newbies” despite many excellent Unity games having been published. Also you conflate your own desires with general usefulness; the majority of games wouldn’t use the built-in terrain even if it was upgraded. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be upgraded, but saying essentially “you have to do what I want or you’re not serious” doesn’t help you. If you want to use Unity and it’s missing a built-in feature you’d like, then work around it. Any serious developer does this. No engine has every possible feature built-in. If you want to give feedback, have it be productive and not whiny.

Disney and Blizzard are both total noobs at making games. There are also tons of other indie developers, with games from Kerball Space Program to Crossy Road, that use Unity. Plus there are awesome hobbyist titles like Pond Wars.

Any developer will tell you that building games is a process of solving problems. Sometimes that means redoing things like terrain because the in built solution is inadequate. It can also involve finding, purchasing and integrating the best solution from the asset store.

Unity is attempting to be the best engine for every developer. Not the best solution for one specific type of game. Many games use terrain, but that’s a long way from all games, or even most games. Its on the todo list, but there are adequate work a rounds for everyone that needs it in the mean time.

Mechanim does have few bugs in editor but nothing game breaking. The sliding foot thing is either from bad animation or developer error. PEBKAC.

Update function works correctly.

Asset store, yea… not great. But at worst a minor annoyance. If you are spending so much time in the asset store that it is a major time suck, time to spend more time leaning to build stuff yourself.

  1. Never had this problem once I figured out what I was doing
  2. SO many in-adequate developers using Unity think they find bugs that are definitely just PEBKAC problems.
  3. Hardly serious issue. There is adequate AA. its not amaze, but meh.
  4. Terrain engine needs a re-vamp. It will happen.

Nothing you’ve mentioned is a serious issue though.

I would like that also.
For example to get rid of models in the asset list that i finaly don’t use.

A better terrain engine would be nice, but hardly as huge a problem as you make it seem. And thats the worst one on your list…

I searched up Pond Wars. And the only thing I could find was rubber ducks as the Star Wars characters. xD

  1. This sounds a lot like you have “Apply Root Motion” checked, but it is hard to tell without an example of what you mean by sliding when idle.
  2. Going to your recent post history, everything you have asked seems to be answered. What has been your experience, is it not as fast as you like or because you didn’t receive the answer you wanted?
  3. Serious games have plenty of other things that can be knocked out while you wait for Temporal AA, and if it is the only thing holding you back then I’m sure you can find 3rd Party help. It is not ideal, but I also don’t believe you are being held back by AA and can not do anything in the mean time.
  4. New terrain would have been nice years ago, but part of “under investigation” is what the overall user needs. Not everyone wants or needs Realtime Voxel Marching Cubes for MinecraftSkyrim, just like not everyone needs 650534 brushes, so they need to find out which tool set would best fit the developers. Does it need work? Absolutely.

I’m not saying Unity is perfect or without flaws, but the flaws you are complaining about don’t seem to be completely on Unity.

Yes please. A trade mark infringement notice from Disney or Lucas Arts has the potential to get more media coverage then anything I can build on my lonesome. Not that I’m really doing much to build publicity on my own.

In either case it will look nice in my collection. I currently have letters from Google and Unity.

The only thing I can agree with on your list is the Terrain engine, it’s god awful. But I believe they’re “working on it”

What is that?

Ok, that is a story you have to share.
