Librem 15 Notebook - Running Unity Engine without Issues?

Hi there,

is anyone using the Librem 15 Notebook? I am considering buying one and i am not sure if unity will run very well. I used the Beta Unity for Linux and had graphics gliches on Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04 with my Radeon 580.

I am between Librem 15 and Macbook Pro 16. Would rather use Linux than OSX, but thats just a preference. Anyone has Issues with Unity on Linux? Or is maybe using the Librem 15 with Unity in professional usecase?

Best Regards
Marco

To be blunt the only reason you would want to buy that laptop would be for the company behind it and the way they run their business. For all other intents and purposes it’s pure trash. A 2C/4T processor is extremely low-end today especially when you are trying to run applications that want as many cores as you can throw at them.

The Intel HD 620 GPU would likely be fine except that it’s having to drive a 4K display. You might be able to create very simple games with very simple graphics but for everything else that’s just not going to cut it.

Once again the only reason to buy that laptop is because of the company since otherwise for less money you can purchase hardware that is far superior to it. The Acer Predator Helios 300 has a 6C/12T CPU, with 16GB RAM, and a GTX 1660 Ti for only $1,100. This is a laptop that can do high-end game development and reddit posts say it’s Linux compatible.

Alternatively if you must have Linux out of the box the System76 Gazelle 15 is the next best laptop you can buy but it will cost a couple hundred extra for the same specs as the Acer.

And let’s be honest here if you’re considering an Apple laptop as one of your devices you don’t truly care about the company behind the Librem 15. Apple uses Foxconn for manufacturing and that company is known to have very high suicide rates due to their business practices.
