Lightweight good game development computer

Hey everyone!

Bugdet: 800-1200 dollars
Lightweight: Since i will be carrying it around (i am a student)

Hi everyone at the moment i am considering buying a new laptop since my old one is becoming pretty old. Therefore i would like to make the best decision as possible with the help of your experiences. The games i usually make on Unity are small and large mobile games but not anywhere like Rust and so on.

I have been looking around but figured out why not ask you guys

Not sure how much ram og GB ssd storage is the best. I have looked a lot at the Dell XPS 13. Thought?

Thanks

In general Unity is pretty light weight. You really need to get something that will run the type of game you are creating. As long as the machine has the specs to run the game comfortably, Unity won’t be an issue.

I’ll let others comment on the specific model.

Unity installation takes 4 gigabytes of HDD space, but if you start downloading stuff from asset store, it takes space as well, and occasionally some packs are quite big.

I heard that unity is usable with 4 gb of RAM, but I’d recommend 16, just in case you decide to do something more demanding on your computer. I used it with 8 gb of memory in the past.

Are you completely set on a very lightweight laptop? Because an MSI gaming laptop is not that much heavier while being considerably more powerful. The Dell XPS 13 is 2.7 pounds while the below laptop is 5.3 pounds.

Battery life may not be the greatest though so if you need a long battery the Dell XPS would be better.

“Twice as heavy” doesn’t exactly strike me as “not that much heavier.”

It’s not that much heavier when some gaming laptops go up to 17 pounds. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s kinda like saying “Well some forest fires spread for miles” when somebody’s kitchen is on fire, no?

Even though i would love the Dell Xps 13, but if i wanted it with the same specs as the Msi it would be double the price almost

What annoys me is the hard drive instead of ssd. There is so much loading when creating games

The previous 13 inch macBookPros are great for unity dev and are in that price range.

It’s what I currently use for working when out of office and at game jams. It’s a i5 with a 512gb SSD and 8gb ram. A little weak when compared to my desktops at home and the office but still gets the job done.

Is

Is 8 GB ram enough?

would that not depend on what you are trying to do, and what kinda of development environment you are using? Also you can get the same one with 16gb which is enough. If you are going to be limited by hardware especially in a laptop it will most likely be the gpu that limits you. But that will only be the case if you are making a graphically demanding game.

My

games are not what you would call graphical demanding. They are either 2d or 3d low poly
