Linear Vs. Open-Ended Vs. Linear+Open-ended, Which is better?

I want to see how the mass would react to this thread. It’ll be very useful for my future projects.

Red VS. Green VS. Red+Green, Which is better?

I mean it really depends. If we’re talking new Color(255, 255, 0) then I think Red+Green is a bit meh as an option. But if we overlay a green with ~50% opacity over a red and end up with a nice new Color(130,128,0) then I think Red+Green is the no brainer option. Pea soup is delicious.

Otherwise I say green for the most part. Red is reminds me of coke too much and way too many games already use red for blood and things like that. I guess green is used quite a bit for foliage too though. Really it’s a tough call and comes down to personal preference. Personally, I think orange is way under represented in the market.

Could you give us a better example of what you’re really asking? This question has some pretty deep implications.

In some games i really enjoy the open ended ending or even the multiple endings.
However, in other games i found it intriguing to find the story taking a unexpected twist and have an amazing linear ending.

So what game are we talking about ?

  • Type
  • Style
  • Story driven ?

Well, Red is a primary color and green is not so Red + Green would be some sort of puke color.

i’m not even really sure what you mean by open ended. like they leave the story open ended for a sequel? i’m assuming you meant open world, as that is more of a contrast to linear, and an open world game can still have a linear story and progression. in my opinion all three can end up being either good or bad, just like any platform game could be good or bad, and any shooter game could be good or bad. there is no one way that is always better.

The mass would respond by, it depends on the game.

linear can be great
open can be great
linear with open elements can be great

linear can be bad
open can be bad
linear with open elements can be bad

hope you can now make an informed choice in your future projects

I prefer my algebra linear but my pants open-ended.

This post has changed my life, I always wondered what I was doing wrong with my open world/linear elements.

I voted for all of them.

I am talking about the game type(and style, of course) and how people reacted about that game type. For example, A friend of mine really hates the (widely regarded as) linear Doom when he was cornered by those ‘goddamned’ monsters and didn’t survive a thousand times, and my friend’s friend really LIKED doom because of it’s linear styled level. he said it gives a challenging feel about the game.@Asvarduil that is what I really ask

Haha, nice post mate

Doom wouldn’t really be the first game I would think of when someone say linear. Anyway, lateral > linear. Whatever that means.
