Another source claimed Unity was adding Linux support a while back. Indeed, Linux is claimed supported on the ‘Buy’ page, but not on the free download. Does Linux support, in fact, exist? Is it pro only? Or does unity only support running unity made games on Linux, and not offer the dev software for the platform?

Only for publishing Unity built applications/games on Linux.
Is it pro only?
No.
Or does unity only support running unity made games on Linux, and not offer the dev software for the platform?
Unity Technologies do not provide the Unity Editor for Linux.
The editor can be run on Linux using Wine. See the community set up wiki page - http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php/Running_Unity_on_Linux_through_Wine
To tell the truth I’ve never heard of Linux support for Unity .but I’m sure they have or will address Linux support because they could gain in popularity by doing so.
Nobody ever said the Unity IDE runs on Linux, or if they did, they were very mistaken. You can publish games that run on Linux using Unity.
