I wondered if there is a reason OpenXR does not support Linux at all.
SteamVR does support linux, and SteamVR supports OpenXR, so that sounds like a possibility to me
This is definitely something I am interested in. I have to keep a Windows VM around for gamedev because of this.
Thanks for reaching out and bringing this issue to our attention. We’re currently investigating to what’s required to support building for Linux with OpenXR.
As we continue to dig into this, it would be really helpful to know more about the specific Linux devices you’re intending to build for. This information could aid us in tailoring a more accurate and beneficial solution for your particular needs.
Could you kindly share that information, thanks in advance!
I am not DevDunk however the initial support would probably just be able to build for the standalone player for Linux desktop using SteamVR for local development using a Linux supported headset (Valve Index).
Currently the OpenXR plugin shows the following:
“The only standalone target supported is Windows x64 with OpenXR. Other architectures and operating systems are not supported at this time.”
Thank you so much for the detailed information! This is incredibly helpful and will help direct our implementation. We appreciate your support and the information.
Rest assured, we’ll keep this thread updated with our progress and any updates on our end. We’re looking forward to sharing our advancements with the community here.
Thank you again for your time and valuable insights!
Is there some kind of timeline or priority level for this that we can expect?
Hi there,
Can we track this integration somewhere?
Can we have an update otherwise we might have to go with an engine that works on Linux properly.
Yes, what’s the latest on this? Is anything in progress here? Where can we follow developments?
+1 would be great to get updates on this
Hi @SamZ_XR , are there any updates on this?
I think they just abandoned this feature… And I really need it
@SamZ_XR Any news?
Proton just added OpenXR support interestingly enough
thats because photon runs on windows behind the scenes
Im trying to build a gameserver to run in a container. why i cannot build in linux a dedicated server?
Im trying to build gameservers for various VR applications. Part of the process was for me to build a linux dedicated server and then put that into a container image and run it on kubernetes. But when i use OpenXR it doesnt work.
I get the following error.
The only standalone targets supported are Windows x64 and OSX with OpenXR. Other architectures and operating systems are not supported at this time.
UnityEngine.GUIUtility:ProcessEvent (int,intptr,bool&) (at /home/bokken/build/output/unity/unity/Modules/IMGUI/GUIUtility.cs:190)
How can i continue to use linux dedicated server???
Hi, are there any updates on this matter? Are there still plans/actions to support development with OpenXR on linux in 2025?
This is so sad and pathetic. To not be able to run a server build on linux to support a multiplayer game running as a docker container. The * are you guys thinking? You dont even have a theory about it? Like an angle some type of perspective? Just some corporate speak? pPPPPFFFFFFTTTttt. You guys are full of it. Nobody is looking at it. Your whole underlying architecture is spaghetti and bloated and people made design decisions that have totally corned you into never being able to provide this functionality.
No wonder the whole AR thing cant take off. Unity itself holding every body back. You must be running Agile arent you. Time to market slaves cutting corners. Sad
