I wanted to know something about the servers. I’m doing a little multiplayer game using sockets. Locally it works but how do I put it on a server? what should I do?
Depends on your plans for the server I suppose. The typical approach is to rent a linux server, create a linux headless build of your game server, and use scp to copy it to the linux server.
On a Windows machine I use 7zip to make a .tar file out of the linux build, and gzip to make it a .tar.gz file, then scp that file. Then I ssh into the linux server, use the tar command to unpack the file, chmod to give the main executable the correct execute permissions, and launch it with the appropriate command line options.
Before renting a linux server though, either set up a linux machine on your local network for testing, or a linux virtual machine. Use port forwarding on your router to allow players on the internet to access your test server. After you have your game working successfully on your local test server the process for getting it working on the rented server will be identical other than the router settings part.
