Loading Unity takes quite some time....

Hi, I purchased a new laptop recently and found that it struggles to load Unity for some reason. I know (or at least I assume) it’s good enough to run it; i7 740QM, GTX460M 1.5gig and 6gig or RAM. Not sure if it’s a known problem with the Medion brand or if it’s something else? It ran fine on my Acer which was of lower spec (not by much mind).

It takes a good hour or so (sometimes more) to load Unity up and this is quite concerning for me as I have a game to be made for a University project by Easter. So, if anyone knows anything that can help me then by all means fire away =).

Thanks,

Cas

HOUR?!? is that just to start unity? or is it a BIG project? is it just unity?

you mention “laptop” so I’d check power management options, probably running in low power mode?

That’s just to start it, no projects. Once it’s running there no evidence that it took so long to load and I can work in it comfortably. No other programs take that long to load, all the other developing environments I have work right away.

My laptop is always set to high performance, no matter if it’s on battery or plugged in, also, I have been to the power management settings and I made sure there was nothing there that could hinder it loading.

It loads in a snap on my MacBook, and it’s 3 years old. 5 seconds while loading my largest project (and incidentally checking the web for an update, as I usually work on my desktop…)

Houston…

It loaded right away on my desktop and my old laptop and this new laptop is better spec wise so it shouldn’t have a problem.

Unity loads much slower in Windows than in Mac OSX…

Have you tried turning off your virus scanner? I’ve tried 3 different virus scanners over the past month and a half and each one resulted in a different set of issues (on a 2 month old Toshiba i5 notebook). Try turning off your virus scanner and see if that makes any difference. If it does, use a different one. I’m now using Panda Cloud which has resulted in the fewest issues so far.

Thats extremely odd.

1 reason is it only uses 1 cpu… Unless thats only when the game is developed.

Well, bigkahuna was right. It was my anti virus; I was using Bullguard, but as soon as I uninstalled that and put Avast on it loaded in about 10secs

I’ve never had that issue before so I always think that people just say it, now I know different.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Let us know how Avast works for you. So far the only issue I’ve run into with Panda Cloud is that Unity will intermittently give me an error when I try to launch it. It’s not a big deal, I just have to launch Unity a second time when it happens, but it would be nice to not have any issues at all.

Glad to hear you found out what the problem was. I’m still shocked you had the patience to wait an hour!

killer1390, unity allways uses 1 cpu, because its x86 program.

A little off topic, but…

Actually, Unity only uses a single core for everything except Beast. If you use Beast it will use all the cores your computer has.

lol, forgot to mention that. In fact, I was waiting for Beast to do its thing 1 time, and dared to try a flash video… LOL. Next time I will set beasts affinity to 5 out of 6 CPUs.

I have no problems with avast at all, and it’s a very good free anti virus too =D. Set it to game mode and it does everything you want without scaring you half to death if something goes wrong.

May i ask what this “beast” is though?

The lightmapping for Unity3D… Also used in other game engines.
