Hey,
So far the localization package seems quite solid, I like the localization script which is decently fast to work with and less messy than the I2 asset
However there is one glaring usability issue with adding comments. Comments are important to give context for a translater or AI to translate the string. In games many words are very ambigious like “hub” “menu” etc which are bound to fail translation. The comment function is however very clunky to use.
A. You can not directly add a comment to the localize scrip on the text object
Suggestion: Before the first language, add a comment slot in the script. This should be done first, after the key in the ideal workflow.
B. The comment adding is very clunky in the LocalizationTable
- You have to click Edit Table Metadata button
- They are collapsed so you gotta expand the metadata first
- Then you need to click the + to add a comment
- Then you need to add comment
- Then you need to expand the comment
Then you can write the comment.
This is a extremely slow and inefficient process. We are lucky we are just adding 200 comments now but this can go in the thousands and tens of thousands for many games. We have 7000 keys total right now.
Suggestion: Always add a comment by default. Its best practice to have comments and if people don’t use them then nothing is lost. Otherwise make sure that the metadata and the comment foldouts are default expanded.
C. You cannot see which string has a comment or not in the table.
Suggestion: Add a star or such if a comment exists or custom data is inside
D. Using many Languages has a very crammed list in the Localization Table
To make it worse, if you manually expand it, after every recompile the layout is reset
Suggestion: Save the user layout of the window, or some other UI improvement
