Hi everybody!
Couple years ago my dev said a big no no for LODs reasoning that LODs use precious computing resources, and since then sticked to that, only making extremely low poly models, but now situation has changed. Here’s the scenario that I’m in:
I’m 3D artist, making a racing game for GearVR and encountered such scenario that the tracks require to have a lot of polys, but the levels are quite simplistic, in fact extremely simplistic - flat track and side barriers hanging in the air. That’s not my decision, I can not raise occluder object between tracks.
So as the track is seen from any point of the track I usually have around 90k polys, if I flatten the tracks (they have rails-like shape) they become to have extremely poor look, especially on low res texture.
So in the far only edges are seen and each track part could have as low as 50 tris instead of 600-700 that they are now (corners and splittings)
So my question is… Are LODs a thing now? Should I use it?
