Looking for a Coding Mentor

Hey guys,

I was wondering if I can find a coding mentor here to help me work through some of the issues I’m going through with my game. Hopefully, I can benefit from some of the experience you guys might have. I’ve done game programming before, but new to Unity/ C#, and would like to find a mentor who can give me some help with how to plan on a high-level way.

I would still be doing the coding myself, but would it if someone can mentor me to make sure I’m on the right path. Especially if I need to plan for future expandability, I can watch out for that.

I really appreciate anyone considering helping me.

Thanks,
Curtis

What kind of issues?
You might just start a few threads if it’s only about a few issues, unless you need intense help throughout the entire project.

If you’re looking for the latter (long-term / on a bigger scale) which involves more effort than a few PMs and/or forum replies now and then, I’d recommend to offer something in return for a proficient developer, as mentoring can take alot of time and effort if it’s done correctly, especially on an expert level.

Otherwise, just post the questions/issues in the forums or UnityAnswers.

Honestly, you’re probably not going to find a mentor here as many of the experienced developers that help out on the forums have jobs in the field that keep them busy. Your best bet is to start doing tutorials, dive right in and come back here and post on the forums to ask questions. The good thing about doing it that way is you get access to everyone on here and not just one person.

Also, Google will become one of your best friends!

The other option is to find someone in a similar position as you and work together to learn. There is also the noncommercial part of the forums Collaboration & Jobs - Unity Discussions which may allow you to look for others who are also wanting to learn in a group.

Thanks guys. I understand the value of these forums, and I really appreciate any help I can get.

I’m planning my first full-scale game that I’m hoping to deploy, and some of them have longer term features I want to implement. Just want to make sure what I have in mind is feasible, and I get someone to help me with a longer-term vision so I can get to my destination without getting lost.

You already found it. This community is the best mentor you could ever have.

OP said C# so he’s already ahead of the curve.

The most recent tutorials from Unity Technologies themselves are pretty good. They’ve been showing off proper thinking and good coding practices. Pick any tutorial for Unity 5.x or newer and you’ll be fine. Start a small project and ask questions here as you get stuck, if you do.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the positive feedback. Truly this is a very supportive community.

I was hoping to find someone who can help me with the through-line , someone who can mentor me by looking at the project scope and helping me map out what is feasible or not.

This forum is great for piecemeal problem-solving, but I think I can also benefit from the help of someone who can guide me more holistically. I can do all the coding and what not, just want to make sure that across all the parts, I’m doing something sensible.

Thanks.
