Hello, I’m a student currently majoring in Game Design looking for anyone who can lead me in the right direction.
I’m thinking about creating a game (just for fun) that’s similar to Diablo and Legend of Zelda (newer games like Twilight Princess). I want to have an environment similar to Diablo and the game view in third-person like LoZ: TP.
Would I be able to do this in 2.5D or should I just go with 3D?
Is up to you. You are a designer. You need to weight pros and cons. Also make sure, if you don’t scope too large, as time frame is very short during academia.

If you’re making a game like that for fun, I suggest to go easy on yourself, and make it small scale for now. If you succeed in making a small scale game with the ideas you presented to us, the knowledge you get from making it, will help you when making bigger game projects.
Diablo for the most part is a isometric/2.5 type game, and Legend of Zelda is more of a 3d type game. The above replys are correct, so if its just for fun only, then start slow, and small. Prototype out your idea, make test scenes, and learn as you go.
My honest answer… its your choice, mine would be (for that situation), 3d, use BuiltIn renderer, gather assets, and start creating, testing, and learning…
This cannot be done in 2.5d if you want the game to play out like the 3d zeldas, in third person over-the-shoulder-view. Based on that description it’s 3d
