Can someone recommend a book that shows the muscles and bones of humans, along with the attachment points. It would also help me if it spoke of the differences between male and female.
If I am going to make 3d models of humans and animals for unity3d developers, i’ll need a book on anatomy that shows the connection points.
Google search for images. There is plenty. Also, you’ll probably end up getting zbrush, and an excellent musculature/skeletal anatomy model comes free inside the Tools palette. It’s a fantastic reference.
I don’t know anything about blender. Zbrush 2018 which just came out has the functionality of Sculptris built into it, and it is really awesome.
However, unless you want to sculpt just for the sake of it, I wouldn’t start with Zbrush and sculpting if you want to make game models. Better to learn how to make models without all of that first, then start getting into that when you got the basics down. JMO. Zbrush and baking is a lot to take in if you don’t already have a solid basis in 3d modeling.
That said, I learned it all in one go and after 6 months am starting to get the hang of it. But it was unduly difficult and I probably would have learned faster and better if I didn’t touch zbrush for the first several months. Maybe I’m wrong about that though. For a better art focused forum though, try polycount.
For things that have been around for ages (ie long enough to be public domain), archive.org is usually a good place to start. There’s a ton of anatomy books on there. I went looking for a Gray’s Anatomy link but I spotted this one on Practical Art Anatomy which looks to fit your description nicely, at least for humans and Artistic anatomy of animals is there as well.
Gray’s Anatomy is the gold standard but is really expensive for the up to date version and there are lots of cheap versions based off the original book (I’m guessing that it is out of copyright).
Unless you are making an anatomy app, you likely don’t need detailed origins and insertions (attachments) of each muscle but are likley more interested in surface anatomy and muscle contours. If you really need detail, scan data such as from the visible human project may be useful.
Thank you, am grateful to know there is anatomy books on insects that I can find. Being able to draw my own custom designed creatures is something I am looking forward to doing.
For a reference to others, I am going to try out the book, “An Atlas of Human Anatomy for Artist”. It’s an old book dating back to the 1950’s by Donver publishing. I got a used paper back for 4.07 on eBay. I’ll let you know how the book is after I use it.
I got the book and started using it. I recommend using it for studying human anatomy. It can also be used as a good reference. It does show some of the attachment points, but not all of them. It does a good job showing the fibers. The book is in color, but not pretty. It is very informative.
