Lord of Rigel, a unity space strategy game demo launch and Kickstarter!

Lord of Rigel is a turn based 4x (Explore, Expand, Exploit, and Exterminate) space strategy game. Our goal is to create an accessible, yet deep, turn based strategy game that will provide a complete space-opera experience. Lord of Rigel will feature a diverse universe with young and elder races that will struggle to shape the future of the galaxy. Players can make a choice between warring elder races or forging their own alliance with a coalition of alien races including minor species. Given all the resources of a galactic empire, players can choose how to navigate through complex diplomacy and survive grand menaces invading the galaxy using an array of game mechanics such as a galactic council, espionage, research, and military force.

Players can expect Lord of Rigel to be completed in 2016 and available for Windows, OS X, and Linux.

  • Species
    Choose from 10 playable races with unique characteristics, behaviors, and leaders. Play along side two elder races and choose the fate of minor species with unique resources and technologies to protect or exploit.
  • End Game
    Shape the fate of the galaxy through conquest, diplomacy, or research the secrets of ascension. Players can create or destroy by harness strategic resources to build Dyson spheres, doomsday weapons or unlock evolutionary secrets.
  • Diplomacy
    Negotiate trade treaties, alliances, and create client states. Each species has unique leaders with personalities and cultural traditions that direct their choices. Shape interstellar policy in the Galactic Council.
  • Espionage
    Espionage that counts! Choose to run a shadow empire and benefit from the work of your spy network. Sabotage fleets or bomb infrastructure. Steal technology and use it as you see fit. Create the “right” political climate by inciting rebellions, and even assassinating leaders.
  • Fleet Combat
    Turn based combat that allows rewards you for using good tactics. Use smaller ships to flank and target weaker rear armor on capital ships. Target subsystems and disable: weapons shields, engines, computers, and other systems. Use onboard marines to raid enemy ships or capture them.
  • Menaces
    Defend yourself from intergalactic invaders or research how to respond to devastating alien probes. Work with the galactic council to stop menaces. Gain galactic prestige by defending the galaxy against those who would destroy it!

I am wondering with Galactic Civilzation 3 coming out very recently what plans do you have to make your game different? They seem to have hit the nail on the head on what players expect out of a 4X space strategy game.

Good question! There’s two big things we’re doing 1) turn based tactical combat. Galciv and Endless Space have had automated systems that you watch where our system plays like XCOM’s squad battles with fleets. (autoresolve is an option in LoR too)

The second big different is we’re trying to make the end game not a “clean up job” with adding two elder species like in Babylon 5. Their cold war and detente with superweapons should make the game play very differently than other current 4x games!
