Low Complexity, High Fidelity: The Rendering of INSIDE

When people are talking about “that Unity look” they are not talking about Playdead’s Inside, that’s for sure. In my opinion this is one of the best looking games ever made and they just handle everything other games have tried and failed at handling absolutely perfectly: Water, smoke, lights, shadows, fire, rain, everything in this game just looks absolutely mind blowing.

And it’s so insane to see how manual and artist driven it is. Hand placed global illumination, hand placed ambient occlusion and hand placed shadows, it’s basically magic. :stuck_out_tongue:

This video made absolutely no sense to me, but it was still entertaining to watch and perhaps someone here will think so as well. :stuck_out_tongue:

And if you haven’t played the game you should do so with a good sound system because it’s one of the best sounding games ever made as well. They have a separate GDC talk about the audio design in the game, available here:

Also, make sure you play it with a controller, it may be required for all I know, but the controls of this game are just as mind blowing as the rest of the game. The feeling as you grab things, pull things, move things around and control the various characters of the game is unlike anything else I’ve experienced.

Easily one of the best games ever made, in my opinion.

They do have a moan about unity’s perf, but it shows that Unity isn’t really the limiting factor at all for games, merely it isn’t always the all-empowering factor. If that made any sense :stuck_out_tongue:

(The make game button won’t always be a dream).

You mean this talk?

Adding that one as well.

That leaves you with a 3 hour long behind the scenes look at one of the best games ever made (fact), and it’s made with Unity (actually a fact)

I can’t agree more. Really enjoyed playing this. One of those beautiful indie darlings I was waiting for and it didn’t disappoint. And I didn’t even hear about it until the beginning of 2016!
Great game.

If you have source code access. The guy at the end was saying, INSIDE is running on a heavily modified Unity 5.0 build (starts at 30:08). If you watch the entire video, they also mention (some) parts they had to change to allow INSIDE not to run slowly.

It seems some of their changes now find their way back into official Unity, such as transform.SetPositionAndRotation.

Me too, was an excellent experience
