Hello I am an Artist for Daz3D i usually create models for that Software.
I got Unity recommended by a friend, and he told me maybe its worth to get into unity store. The Daz3D cut of the price is 50% so the 30% from Unity is great welcome bonus.
My Models are most of the time high poly for realistic IRAY Pictures usually around 100-500k.
I color my models with Substance Painter to get a realistic look with “Glossy / Roughness / Specular / Height” and more Maps (total 8). For Daz3D i usually use 2-4k Textures.
I am not sure that poly count and detail is welcome in unity. So I try not to create something that people hate on this software and like to ask beforehand what is OK and what is not OK.
I checked some hours the store and found out that “low poly” models and city’s are very popular. I am new to that theme because if i almost never reach less than 100k polys.
I like to ask following question to the more experienced users here:
Is it worth to join the unity store with low poly models? Or should i still focus on High poly models 50-500k?
How much is low poly? I see lot say around 1-1500 polys count as low after that its medium and I think 10k+ counts as high.
How exactly is the low poly count fixed to an object? Does it mean if I create a building the door can have 1500 the windows 1500 and everything 1500 or does the whole BUILDING need to have 1500?
Coloring? I see lot of models has just flat color like green for a bush and done. Is that really the way to go or should I add cartoonish colors like League of legends models for example? Or can I go with Substance Painter create realistic materials?
5.I see lot videos where they create 3 side Faces and not 4 Side faces is it necessary to have 3 side faces for all models in unity? Because in Daz3D the best was 4 Side and some 3 sides was OK but never 5 sides that explodes the model.
Thanks for all the answers and sorry for my English.
1. Is it worth to join the unity store with low poly models? Or should i still focus on High poly models 50-500k?
Absolutely, low poly is worth it. I mean, 500k isn’t even usable in games as far as I know.
2. How much is low poly? I see lot say around 1-1500 polys count as low after that its medium and I think 10k+ counts as high.
There’s no definitive specification. Just… as low poly as possible while achieving the desired style, really.
3. How exactly is the low poly count fixed to an object? Does it mean if I create a building the door can have 1500 the windows 1500 and everything 1500 or does the whole BUILDING need to have 1500?
Again, don’t focus on the specific vertex count. Focus on efficient, minimalist meshes. I mean, a low poly mesh for a basic door should be like a rectangle for the door, with another one functioning as the knobs. So like 16 vertices can get the job done. Obviously if you want cutout details or higher detail on the knobs, that’s fine. But 1500 vertices for even a AAA quality door sounds like too much to me.
4. Coloring? I see lot of models has just flat color like green for a bush and done. Is that really the way to go or should I add cartoonish colors like League of legends models for example? Or can I go with Substance Painter create realistic materials?
This is totally dependent on what style you’re going for, whether it’s hand-painted, flat-shaded, PS1 era, etc. This question can only be answered by you, the artist.
5.I see lot videos where they create 3 side Faces and not 4 Side faces is it necessary to have 3 side faces for all models in unity? Because in Daz3D the best was 4 Side and some 3 sides was OK but never 5 sides that explodes the model.
I don’t understand the question here, sorry.
Thanks you very much for all your answers. For the last question i mean if a Polygon face need 3 edge sides or 4 edge sides. I found out that smartphones can handle only 3 edge sides and no quads.
You shouldn’t worry about quads vs. tris… the file format you save in (FBX) will take care of that as needed.
I do think if your artwork is good you’ll find customers here (and/or in DigitalGift.Shop – PM me for details!). But yeah, you need to push those polygon counts lower. 100k tris may be OK for a main character who’s going to be taking up most of the screen, with background stuff fairly unimportant. But anything that’s a set piece or background dressing needs to be a lot lighter than that, or most computers just won’t be able to keep up.
So you’re a Daz 3d artist? Cool.
That would mean, your 3d art would be fantastic looking, for game use.
If possible, do you have a few examples we could see?
It’s a user on Reddit who randomly inserts commas into his/her posts. I never read usernames before a comment, so when I see the comma, it drives me nuts. Then I look up and see the username and realize it’s /u/CommaHorror, and I chuckle, knowing they got me yet again.
I only asked because your previous post was loaded with 4 extra commas.
