OK LD Mini is doing a game jam theme on Youth, but as an elderly game developer, should a modern game based on youth cover the topic of cyber bullying?
Are there any good resources on how to counter cyber bullying, in the modern era?
Any good articles on scenarios and what about game theory applied to cyber bullies?
Would be nice to have something fun and uplifting for once. Like apocalypse or robot uprising.
On a serious note, games that attempt to cover real-world problems tend to be cringe-worthy.
Infamous examples include divinity: dragon commander and some of the bioware games.
Unless you have genius scenarist blessed by the god of scriptwriting, those topics are best avoided. They will most likely feel forced, plus they will feel “immersion breaking” in many games.
pfft covering issues is the ONLY interest i have in gamedev
well… no not really … but its what drives me
“jerkoff” just-for-fun games arent worth a damn imo … waste of time to dev … for the most part
lols
but yeah id suppose you gotta write it and handle it the right way
but if people wanna cringe i say: LETS MAKE THEM CRINGE!!!
lols but yeah iam not aiming to make cringe
“Cringe-worthy” in that case means that the product is garbage story-wise.
I think that at least some people that try to bring in “real world problems” into games severely lack imagination.
If you have fantasy or scifi world, you can make ANYTHING. And the only thing they’re capable of is discussing hippies and morality of genetically engineered products, vaccinations, etc. In a fantasy world. (yes that really happens in dragon commander). That’s pathetic. It is one thing where you put that into, say, stick of truth or into gta game which are inherently parodies. But when someone tries to put that into game that wants to be taken seriously, I can only think that scriptwriter was probably an idiot and should be fired. Anyone can see that shit on the news, or just outside of their window.
You should aim higher than replicating reality or using games to push some pointless agenda related to real-world issues. Because reality would not make a very good game. Make something amazing that can’t be found in the news, haven’t been said before.
