I just want to present you my first Unity-made game in the Mac App Store called Birdy Bounce.
The aim of the game is to get as high as you can, it features a local top 10 Highscore, online leaderboards are currently in closed beta and will be released the following weeks or months.
The game is already very successful in the WP7 App Store and I hope to make some people happy with it on the Mac platform as well. An iOS release is planned for the future.
I hope you like it! Download it from the Mac App Store.
The conversion took some time because I wrote a completely scalable UI which supports every aspect ratio and resolution. I already had high res graphics so everything I had to do was port the code. The workflow in Unity is the best I have seen so far, everything went very smoothly. If your XNA code is well organized you will have a working version in no time, it’s really just a matter of hours or days. Polishing the Mac version might however take some time, I personally played around with some less important things for weeks because I wanted to release a version which really feels native on a Mac.
It has been my first Unity project. I am fairly experienced with DirectX, Managed DirectX and XNA and still Unity is the best thing I have ever worked with.
The gameplay is Doodle Jump / Icy Tower like. However, the art style and the platform types are pretty new in my opinion. I’m not planning to get rich with the game, but the feedback on the WP7 platform has been that positive that I just had to release it on other platforms as well. It’s just so much fun to develop at the moment, I already have stuff for 2 or 3 updates ready to go. As long as it’s fun for me and the community I will continue to support this game. I mean look at the bird’s eyes… I just cannot resist working on new features
I am planning to add a lot of content in future updates, dozens of ideas are waiting to be added and some will be very unique. I am planning to go on working on Birdy Bounce for quite some time. Online leaderboards will be released as soon as my February exams at the university are done, as soon as online leaderboards work I will push out some powerups and gameplay enhancements.
Thanks for the feedback so far! I am slowly entering the top 50 of the games toplist, great to see that there are so many people who like it
Birdy Bounce is doing surprisingly well It’s already in the top 30 of the games list in a number of countries. It also got pretty good reviews from both the App Store users and App Store game review sites.
My daily sales at the Mac App Store are already quite a bit higher than on WP7. I think I will expand the 0.99 launch sale at least to February.
Have fun with Birdy Bounce It would be nice if you could post which code you used to avoid that everyone has to try out all of them to find a working one.
