Macbook for unity

Hello everyone, wanted to ask this questu=ion for so long. I have a Windows laptop for making games on Unity (different 2d and 3d project for mobiles and destop with not great graphics). But actually I really want to buy Macbook. Does it really make sence to buy it for game development on unity? And which model you guys can recommend?

Unless you want to make an iOS game, not really.

No. In my limited experience a decent model is about one-third the performance of a similarly priced PC.

What’s your budget? Because if you can’t afford at least the 24GB/36GB models you shouldn’t buy any of them.

As I study in university, I thought exactly about laptop. And in my country, for my budget, I chose 16’ M1 pro 16 gb with 10 cores or 14’ m3 pro 18 gb with 11 cores

In that case don’t even consider a MacBook. I have the M1 MacMini 16GB model. A fresh boot has the system using around 8GB leaving just 8GB for Unity. You can use it to learn the basics but it’s barely usable beyond that. It’s just too weak for actual development and constantly out of memory. It’s okay as a minspec test machine but that’s it.

I have done a significant amount of dev on an M1 Macbook Pro with 16gb, on what is a fairly ambitious mobile game, (but you know, it’s still a mobile game, with medium to small scenes), so I think it is doable, I just don’t think it is a good allocation of money, you can get something much faster for less.

I’m working with Unity and Macs for 10 years now. Creating scenes in Unity and integrate it with Imovie for trailers and GarageBand for SFX is insane, for me just this makes Macs invaluable for an Indie perspective.
