Machine spec required

Hi,

I was wondering if the following spec machine would be suitable for developing and testing using Unity:

Model 12" Aluminium Powerbook
Processor 867 MHz G4
RAM 640MB (PC2100)
Display 12.1" TFT
Graphics Processor Nvidia GeForce4 420Go 32MB
Hard Drive 40GB
OS MacOS 10.4.9 (Tiger)

Although this is within the suggested spec on the main page, in reality would this be enough? I would be interested to hear from users with the exact same spec or would the consensus be to save up for a higher spec machine.

Advice would be appriciated

…or maybe this machine, still in buget and slightly highr spec:

Model 12" Aluminium Powerbook
Processor 1 Ghz G4
RAM 1.25GB (PC2100)
Display 12.1" TFT
Graphics Processor Nvidia Fx Go5200 - 32MB
Hard Drive 40GB
OS supplied MacOS 10.4.9 (Tiger)

I don’t have a machine like this, but I’m guessing you’d have problems with the video card. 32 MB really isn’t enough video RAM for modern 3D games. I’d guess the minimum you’d want is probably 64 MB but 128 MB would be better, especially for development.

I developed most of the Big Bang Brain Games on an iBook that was slower than that and had a slightly worse graphics card. Script compilation takes a few seconds more than ideal, and you’ll get poor framerates in the editor when you don’t have the game view maximized. (In a non trivial scene) But it’ll definitely work well enough to make a commercial game with.

Cheers,

Thank you very much for your replies.

I think I will purchace the second spec laptop as they seem to be relativly cheap to get hold of.

If it isn’t up to the job, then I can easily sell it and save up for a higher spec machine.

If you are low on money I would recommend a desktop computer.
Laptops are weaker in performance and higher in price normally.

1 more question.

Will it run with Mac OS 10.3.7 (Panther) or does it need at least 10.3.9 ?

Many thanks
