Make a game in 48 hours competition! Ludum Dare (22!) December 16th-19th, 2011

I found out about this last year sometime and finally participated in Ludum Dare #20 in April. I wish that someone had pointed me to it earlier.

The basic concept is: Make a game in 48 hours. EVERYTHING is made by you and you alone in those 48 hours. The theme is voted on leading up to the competition and released as the competition starts.

A more relaxed version that allows looser rules and teams runs along-side as a game jam.

They are roughly scheduled 3 times a year with some other fun and frolic interspersed throughout the year.

Follow the link, take a peek, read the rules, sign up, participate, have fun!

Here is a link to some of the Unity entries from #21:

This is a great way to hone your Unity skills, even if you don’t have any!

I’m in! I knew about this because I saw Notch’s live stream in #21.

So I’ll be participating for Ludum Dare 22!

Will you be joining?

god no, i’ve just finished my latest title i don’t want to do any more, mummy stop hitting me.

Cmon, put those fingers back to work! You got 10 days to relax.

Dabeh, were collabing. you have no say in this.

I’m in - at least as much as I can be.

I won’t be doing 48 hours straight.

I have swimming Saturday morning with my son, but after that, I’ll be pushing hard to see what I can do.

Other way around little boy.

Dang…

I think I’m gonna have to take a break on my FPS, that thing is killing me. I am most likely in!

Slenderman hack and slash, here I come!

I’ll try to compete also. I’m almost wrapping up another project at the moment and I think it will be done in time to compete.

I find it’s really great practice. You really have to make it lean and mean. If you think of the thread about making it with Unity as an indie, and think “I need to dev x number of games in n time” learning what you can do in 20 or 30 hours of hard core work is important. Seeing where you fall off target is also good.

would take me that long to make decent models

I think it would be better if they provided a model pack of a various assortment of models, and the best use of those models to make a game wins.

Heh… suggest a theme!

I think this is way many of the entries are pixel art and/or 2D.

Sounds very cool! I’m supposed to spend the Dec 16th-19th with my new girlfriend though  Maybe next time! I like working solo. Game jams are so stressful when working on a team.

I suggested a theme for “One Minute” and “Randomness GamePlay”
but the top 2 themes are Zombies and Kittens…now that’s a new one! I really hope those don’t get through -_- I might do the Jam, it should be pretty fun, but a shame they don’t have prizes considering the size of the competition. (well, it’s more like a dare I suppose)

IIRC, the “suggestions” are at this point in the order they were suggested, not in order of choice. One week out, the suggestions will be closed and voting will start. The way it will work, afaik, is the suggestions will be divided in 5 or 6 sections and then they will be voted up or down. The top 5 go into the “final” and on the last day there will be 25 final choices to vote on, and the winner will be announced at the start of the competition (usually resulting the server crashing when everyone pings it at the same time…).

And if you want to see how a pro approaches it, you can watch this video:

Actually it can be much more entertaining and less stressful watching such dev videos instead of attending.

i swear in that video of notch he pasts a large amout of his code.

Got of think of something that requires minimal art, can be completed in 2 days and something not completely derivative.

Yay! They’ve done the first suggested cull on the suggested themes…

I have to say I’m a little nervous!

I’m worried I’m not going to have an idea for the theme or have one that is not as good as the others!
