I’m working on a iOS game at the moment it’s got to the stage where the features of Unity Pro like static batching Occlusion Culling could really benefit the games performance dynamic shadows would of course be very welcome.
Would starting a Kickstarter to fund the purchase of Unity Pro iOS pro be a good idea? I don’t have 1000s of facebook friends or twitter follows, so I’m thinking that it would be difficult to get exposure for the kickstarter anyway.
No, you wont raise a dime if people don’t already know you . Work with what you have , then after you make an awesome game, make a kickstarter for the next one . This is assuming your famous at that point
I’m not sure if it’s going to work but you can always give it a shot. Maybe have a nerved down version of your game already playable in for instance the webplayer so people can see the goods and then you also have a valid story to back your kickstarter up. Don’t forget kickstarter is not just free money, you’re going to put a lot of time in it thinking out a campaign strategy. But if all you need is pro + iOS pro you will only need to raise 3000 bucks which is not very high for a kickstarter campaign and you just might be able to pull it off.
Don’t make it a kickstarter to get Unity Pro - make it a kickstarter for your game. Show off tech demos and videos of what you have so far, and explain that you need the funding to put the final touches on it and release it.
Thanks for the replies, some good points are being made. I like the playable web demo idea.
Yeah, this is my issue. Not sure where I can get the word out about the kickstarter.
Oh yeah, the kickstarter would be for the game but in being as transparent as possible the main goal would be to purchase Unity iOS Pro.
Another thing is, I’m not sure of a reward scheme aside from copies of the game which is a mobile game isn’t as high value as a desktop version would be.
I just saw a crowd-source page for Edgar Vigdal’s Warblade MKII game which touted the purchase of Unity 4 as one of the major elements of his campaign - he was only shooting for $8000 overall funding.
