Hello!
As the tittle says, i’m making a tycoon game with some friends. I’m new to unity, but I know Java, and the basic from C and JS (Second year Computer engineering).
My idea is to make the game in C# because it’s much more similar to C and Java than JavaScript to me (since I’ve been studying Java a couple of years, i’m more comfortable with it), but i’m not sure if JS would be easier to start.
Using the tutorials and some assets I’ve been able to figure how to do the basics, but i’m having problems with the options of buy, upgrade, place and move.
The idea of the game is a tycoon in full 2D, like food tycoon or tiny tower (or tiny airplane) so no isometric view here. We’re still thinking about how the game will be, I really like tiny tower and tiny airplane mechanics, but my friends and associates like the gameplay of food tycoon.
My doubts start with how to implement drag and drop mechanics, simple AI and waypoints and buy/upgrade characters or items.
Right now i’m using 2Dtoolkit, NGUI and playmaker because i’ve been told that they’re all I need in 2D games, is that right?
Sorry for the long post, my bad English (IMy first language is Spanish).
Thank you for reading and I hope you can help me.
Hola Amigo (That’s my Spanish to you xD)
If you try to look back on the most Tycoon games you’ll notice that many of these games are grid based. This will be the easiest way for placing buildings and such. AI and way points is pretty easy too, grid based you can use a A*(A-Star) and have a simple script to give a destination. For drag’n’drop (buildings i assume?) you will simply have it match into the grid points and move it around with the mouse.
If you want the more advanced version (no grid) you would from my assumptions do the same but instead of having it limited to grids you have “free placement” it’s harder but works equally well and should be possible without problem in unity3D!
Hope this help a little!
I’d indeed recommend C# as it is very similar to java and can do more advanced stuff than JS. If you’re already comfortable with Java (which you state you are), C# is a great option
For pathfinding, you can download a free script package that you can use at A* Pathfinding Project
This works for a grid-based as well as for a non-grid based approach that jackie mentioned. However, when you go grid-based you could optimize it to your grid (this A* project creates it’s own grid, but you could better use your own grid if you’ve got one already)
Hello!
Thank you very much for your answers. I’ve been so busy this last week that was impossible to me to answer.
I decided to make the game in a grid-based system, but A* seems too complex for the things that I want to do. Is there an easier (or for noobs) solution?
I have no problem if I have to pay for that asset, because it will really help my getting the game to a functional stage.
Thank you very much for your attention!
Bye
Hello,
for the build system can I get Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making and adapt it?
Bye!
no one knows if I can adapt that asset to my needs?
Bye!
I would recommend you starting with easier projects. A tycoon game might make more problems on the logic side and as yous aid you dont have much unity experience, it might be better to first do some smaller projects inside of unity, you will get a better idea of how some things work. Basic programming might help you solving basic problems. If you intend to make a tycoon game you should learn something about texture atlasing, combinechildren, dynamic object managers, drawcalls, raycasts, ontriggerenter, oncollisionenter, List in C#, grid tile systems, UV coordinates. If you have exerience with all mentioned topics you could actually try to develop a tycoon game. I did one, and I can tell you it really wasnt fun for me, because the logic part was very annoying as there are many cases that can come up…
Woah, that’s a lot of things I don’t know >< You’re right, I might start with something easier like an endless runner or a platformer.
Meanwhile i will try to learn that things to work on this project in the future.
Thank you for your answer ^^
