Making an anime-based game

Okay, so I’ve been pretty MIA for a while now, mostly due to schooling and a few personal issues. I had even been working in a group that I finally decided I needed to drop out of, rather than hinder their productivity. The point is that I’ve gotten a little rusty, and I need something to do, probably more as practice than anything else.

I was thinking about working on a project based in an anime world, that seems like a good idea to me. If the game is just practice, then it will most likely never be released to the public, so copyright wouldn’t be an issue.

In addition to all of that, I had an interesting idea for a fully 3D third-person game based in the Bleach Universe. It’s an interesting idea I had that would make character customization for an mmo feasible and practical.

With all of that said, I wanted to ask you all some interesting questions. If you’ll kindly answer any that you might be able to answer, the feedback is greatly appreciated.

Questions:

  1. If there was an open-world Bleach MMORPG geared towards fast-paced action, what would be a good title for it?
  2. Are the rumors of Tite Kubo’s death true? If so, who currently owns the copyright? (Though I doubt I’ll ever need it)
  3. If this project of mine ever gets to a point where it might have some promise, should I put up a collaboration post and and follow through, trying to obtain a copyright that I’ll probably never get anyways? Or is that just wasted time?
  4. Does anyone have or know of a free and generic rigged model to use as a stand-in for characters in a game like this during production?

And finally, to clarify a few things:

  1. This is currently a personal project and not a collaboration, though you can feel free to inquire about that.
  2. I am not trying to put this game out to the public, it’s just practice. However, my mind might change on that topic eventually.
  3. I am an 18-year-old programmer and amateur modeller, for anyone who might be wondering. Read my Signature for more info.
  4. I have a busy schedule, so I’m sorry if I don’t get back someone right away.

Thanks for any opinions and advice you give, and as always, any bit of advice is welcome!

To answer your second question, no. Official word would have come out pretty fast. He’s still drawing and writing the series.

burnpsy, you have a very valid point. I had heard a while back that he was injured in an earthquake. After hearing that he had lived through it, I heard something recently about him being dead and ended up confused on the topic.

drewradley, taking that to be a serious suggestion, I wouldn’t use that name. I actually think it’s pretty witty though. If I did parody videos, that would’ve inspired me to do a whole series. It doesn’t have the right feel for an mmo though…

I would love it if you guys could shoot some more ideas to me, and if anyone wants to share a thought via pm, feel free.

So, you are an 18 year old with little experience who wants to take an owned IP (worth many many millions) and create a mmorpg (which also takes millions)…

Maybe aim smaller?

Don’t forget their lawyers will shut down your project ASAP .
It doesn’t matter if your doing it for free, they pay millions a year to lawyers who just seek and destroy projects which infringe on their rights .

Even if you take Bleach out , and you want to make an Animie MMO , your still talking about a game that would need a giant art budget to look half way decent .

Thank you for the concern, but as I tried to make clear in my original post, I don’t have any current intention of releasing the game to the public. As for testing, I’ll be the only one testing it, so I can use the SmartFox Server free evaluation to ensure that the game would work properly. And since the game will never be released on the web, and will never come to full completion, with only me working on it right now, I truly can’t see how I would be shut down, or even why they would want me shut down. That’s like saying that you can get arrested for cosplay, an absurd statement…

So let me get this straight. You’re going to make an MMO, based of a licensed IP, strictly for yourself, you’re never going to complete it, or show it to anybody, and you’re asking for us to give it a name? Ok then…

  1. I have no clue, but drewradley’s suggestion would probably fit just fine given that the general public will never hear about it.
  2. Idk, but it would most likely be whoever is publishing it. The big companies tend to hold all the rights.
  3. Unless you’re a mega-huge studio with a proven track record and a huge budget, you’re never going to get the rights to any major IP. They simply don’t want just anyone butchering their image(and with good reason).

Nahh, he doesn’t need any of that honour :stuck_out_tongue: Since he is making it for himself and no one will see it (perfect for an MMO of course)…

Whatever floats yer boat ~_~

you may have some inspiration from this web game ,Bleach Online this is a Bleach Game based on Bleach

I have to say it’s a bit odd to aim to make an MMO that only you will ever play.

(If an MMO is played by only one person, is it still an MMO? Philosophy ensues)

Why not just make an RPG instead??

If you make the project stay in Dōjin size instead of a serious commercial product, they usually just turn the blind eye to you. And ah… a personal MMO is quite a … new idea… I

This is a year and a half old topic. Don’t expect the creators to read it.

The original idea behind this was to find a way to fund a project as large as an mmo, though looking back, this idea didn’t quite go as well as I had hoped. I expected it to “fail” from day 1 to be honest, which is why I set it up to only impact myself and my few friends when it did.

Also,

For the record, yes I still read comments on my posts, but I completely understand what it is you’re saying here, this is very common.

Hydrogen Nitride is another good candidate.
