Making changes to Asset Store products

Hi, I hope this is the right place to post, as the Asset Store section seems to be for promoting products.

Anyway, over the last 6 months or so, my modelling skills have greatly improved, and I’m in the process of updating all of my Asset Store products - all of them are space vehicles. In doing so I would like to make some design changes as well as updating the general quality.

I was wondering, is it considered bad practice to make significant design changes to a model asset after it has been published? I don’t want to upset people who’ve bought it and integrated it into their game but on the other hand I get the feeling that they might be well pleased, since some of the original designs are far too simple and even IMO ugly, and from my perspective they look bad on my shop front.

Are there any general practices in this regard?

Cheers, William

If someone has already purchased your models from the Asset Store and you put upgraded ones into the package, then the customer is getting a free upgrade. I don’t really see too many people being angry about that. I sure would not be.

You may also garner yourself some good will toward purchasing new packages you release on the store. Instead of saying, “Go buy version 2 of these for more money,” you’re saying, “Here’s a free upgrade to version 2.”

If you want to make sure that someone does not lose the models they already have, you can include the older models in the package as well. Existing customers who don’t back up their older packages before updating would still have the models; new customers would get more models in the package and might even see that as more value for their purchase. I have seen code assets on the store with a ZIP file containing previous versions of the project for those who prefer it or are running an older version of Unity. This would be similar.

Include the original and improved versions. Someone might need to re-download an original version. Put the old versions in a folder called “Legacy” to make it obvious they are not the best option. It also shows how you care about your products and that they are not abandoned.

Allright, including the older version sounds like the right way to go. Thanks!

Just make a new package, deprecate the old one and offer a major upgrade. This way new customwrs will only get to see your new package, while your old customers can decide whether to continue using the old one or upgrade to the new package.
