I am making my first game and I am having trouble making characters. I can animate the one I did make but I am having a hard time making more realistic characters. I have watched many tutorials on how to make characters but it is all no use, If you have any suggestions pleas let me know.
I would suggest you just purchase the assets you need and concentrate on your coding skills. You can fix crappy graphics by swapping them out, but it’s tough to fix crappy code.
For realistic characters you could try
http://www.makehumancommunity.org/
You can either make a complete character or use your output as a base mesh.
As for making character from scratch. I think it’s similar to drawing or painting in the sense that when you start-out it’s hard to draw something exactly how you imagine it in your head, but then you get better with practice.
One thing that helps is if you have a photo or some good concept art you can import it into your modeling app and line-up the vertices with the picture so you can get the proportions precise.
I have a similar question. Thanks for the makehuman link did not know about that.
As for the question. If you are just starting out, you tend to spend allot of time browsing the internet looking for free 3d models and characters to use, and most are for noncommercial use. Usually, you don’t have the budget available to spend on needed assets and you then turn to making them yourself which is learning curve and takes allot of time.
What do developers do if they have a small budget, but the game requires 30 characters and you can’t afford to buy these characters and all the items that need to go with them clothing, scenes, vehicles etc.
creating your own characters is not that hard, make a blocky low poly human and then add subpatch, it is really easy and then you can add the details you need with your own topology.
I do not use blender, but you can do something like this:
It is a longer video but is because is a tutorial, once you got the workflow you can do a basic human in less than 10 minuttes
Makehuman is “good” but you will sspend more time trying to do the specific human you want in that program
Started learning how to make character, also 3D a few years ago, with consistent practice, and learning got to this level . . .
3D models by charlesmercyhilllamb - Sketchfab
One of the best // most difficult stuff over even making anything good in 3D, is knowing the ’ cheat ’ of edge - loops, you could try looking here to see where they’ve been placed, imo 70 - 80 % of good 3D - quality is placing those correctly . . .
You can almost see the ’ loops ', or edge - flow stuff, learning how to make that is very important over making either non - geometrical, or more organic stuff . . .
That’s perhaps the best // most difficult skill to learn, at least looking at the stuff myself . . .
ohhh, and you’re looking to learn 3D, here are a few good youtube - stuff, they teach everything you need to know . . .
SCULPTING
RETOPOLOGY
They get you to a good - enough quality place, and the rest you can learn other places, here’s a more pro - content . . .
HIGH - QUALITY 3D CHARACTERS // MODELLING
One thing though, in order to learn all that it’s bit of school, or so on, it takes effort, investment, and last training to get that good, however it’s a good place to start the ’ journey ’ over learning the basics of 3D, or how-to-retopo stuff, as it could also be called, bit lol . . . .
Good luck, learning 3D is fun, and with practice it goes from days, to a few hours to make a good character, depending on how much quality // texture - work also looking for . . . .
