I’m trying to figure out how to make a modular system out of low poly characters I already own. Which arent modular right out the pack btw. Making a pseudo modular system of sorts. I’ve racked my brain on this. But couldnt think of any clever work arounds. So if you guys have already tackled a similiar problem any help would be appreciated.
what do they look like?
Typical way to make something modular is:
- finding swappable part through common connection to stitch multiple model broken to part.
- finding parameters to manipulate (part size, colors, etc …)
Without a contact sheet of the model it’s hard to know what can be done.
Not enough data. Modularity can be achieved by making a common skeleton and putting different parts on it.
Also, take a look at UMA system.

Im trying to do it with the synty packs basically, cut them up and use the models who are at least similar enough to decieve the eye if parts are swapped around.
Is something like blender the only way to turn a whole mesh into individual pieces?
Any modeling package would work. People suggest blender because it is free and very powerful. However, if you, for example, already have subscription to another modeling package, then you can use that instead.
I know in blender this would be a timely process, does UMA have a feature that kind of automates the seperation of the model by body parts?
No, it doesn’t (unless something changed since I last used it), you have to preapre “pieces” of the model for uma by hand, and it stitches them together into characters.
Basically this is not something that can be easily automated, because you have to tell where one part ends and another begins.
To do something like this with your own custom models you need a 3d program, such as blender. If you were using models you purchased in a pack that aren’t specifically designed to be integrated with some kind of modular system, you will need to fundamentally rebuild the models.
It’s not something that can be done quickly or easily. It requires sound knowledge of how 3d models work in general.
Look at the polycount wiki for modular characters and there is some great articles to help get you started.
Well guess i have to just role up my sleeves. Thx guys I really appreciate all the help.
