One of the things I might want in my game is the ability to be modded with ease.
I guess my biggest question is how to make a plugin file for my game. Is there a procedure I could follow, or will I have to start by building the wheel?
I only know about the individual parts that go into creating a game, but not a lot about putting the game together as a whole. Any suggestions for reading or procedure would be most appreciated.
it depends a lot on what kind of game you are making and what exactly you mean by plugin for your game. One thing is a puzzle game where user can create levels, other thing is RTS where people can add their own units and change game logic.
General advice (i’m not old but old enough to give advice about this:) :
if you want to make a game, make a game. Leave all the fancy stuff for later, don’t try to be too wise. Especially if this is one of the first games you are making, scrap all the fancy stuff and just make the game.
No one will care about games that you started, and how cool they should have been. What matters is what games you have completely finished, and released. Start small but do it all the way!
Ah, thanks for the suggestion. After a little more research (plugins, rather than “mods”), I see that plugins are a function for the pro version of Unity.
I figured that plugins would be important to account for in the beginning, centering all game building around the idea, but from this new angle it seems less so.
So for now, I shall work only on said basic game. 'twill be an action-adventure RPG, in case you care to know.
It’s highly unlikely you’d use actual plugins for mods. Those are for (relatively rare) cases where you want to use native C++ code for whatever reason. Instead it’s a matter of having data files that can be replaced by the user, which is an entirely different matter.
