Right now Unity is my life, day and night.
So the question for me right now is… how do I make time for normal life.
I wish I was you meltdown.
Not sure if you’re being sarcastic but if you’re stuck doing something else, make the change bro!
I was a full time web developer/software developer/datagrid binder and I just wished and wished I could become a full-time Unity dev… doors opened and now here I am
If you set your mind on opportunities, things will happen… trust me.
Meltdown, quite agree with you, but it’s always easier to say than to do… Lots of people have families, and can’t give up their jobs. So just trying to find some time to create games, hoping to make it the main job
You just gotta find/make the time. If you are in the tech or games industry, learning new things is part of the package. Hopefully interest alone will drive you to find the time, if you are trying to force it can take the fun out of it. I started messing with Unity about a little over a year ago, figuring eventually our studio would at least consider it. Now, I spend about a quarter of my time at work in Unity, and quite possibly working with it full time in the next few weeks.
Unity is growing, and pretty much becoming the platform of choice for mobile. If things keep going the way they are, it shouldn’t be hard to find a job using Unity in the near future. The time investment could be worth it.
You need to make your life more efficient.
Story - My ex GF went to the grocery store every day and then complained that she had no free time. Any attempt to point out that inefficiency was met with an argument that really didn’t hold water. On the other hand, I typically go every month or 2. All that time spent shopping is saved for things that I think are more important.
Likewise, chores. Doing a little bit here and there is wasteful. Getting it all done at once is more efficient.
You need to go through your life and find the things you’re doing that you don’t care about, and either stop doing them, or minimize them.
And if, during that process, you find that gamedev is one of those unimportant things, you should seriously think about that.
Quite agree about “unimportant things”. On my job sometimes I make breaks, to relax a bit, to read news. I have lots of interests and so I read lots of news (hokey, IT industry, software, etc). Of course, I spent too much time on that. Just some time ago I started to try NOT to read too much. It’s difficult, because I have got used to it, but I’m really trying, because I hope it will help me to save my time a bit and read something useful, e.g. Unity tutorials, or write some Unity code. It’s difficult to organize all the time like that, but it is worth trying.
The gaming division guys here eat, breathe and breathe Unity3D .
Follow the tutorial instructions, view the tutorial videos, learn coding, learn modelling, become proficient.
I have the opposite problem. I work for a game company and I’m using Unity 8-12 hours per day! If you want to start earning a living with Unity, it’s probably easier than you think. Check out the job offerings page, that’s what I did for a year.
I do all my game dev during my daily commute (on a train) to my “real” job in London. Without this, those 2 hours a day would be completely wasted, I have a slightly smug look when I glance over at other commuters looking bored. The downside is I have to break everything that needs doing into 1 hour tasks, which isn’t always convenient.
