Mapping a World

Hello Everyone,

My name is Daan, from the Netherlands and currently I’m pretty new at Unity.
My big dream however is to make this RPG like game (maybe together with some others)and my head is really exploding with ideas and inspiration.

Now I have learned that the priorities of gamemaking are first: mapping-modeling charakters- and add everything together with scripting into a fitting world etc.

So I thought I’d be wise to first just learn how to map an environment ( I have the standard terrain assets by the way), but those are just for making pre-set outside areas.
I’d also like to know how to make buildings or dungeons etc. but I can’t just find a proper tutorial how to do such things and I keep finding myself in a lot of difficulties with the assets I downloaded. Like the water and air.

So, is there anyone out there who can help me or give me a few wise tips?

Greetings, Daan ( Btw, I’m just a hobby-dude, so I don’t have any money to spend)

Your best bet is to use a separate application to model your objects (including buildings urban features and landscape features) as well as your characters. Blender is an open source software dedicated to 3d modeling and animation. It is free to download at www.blender.org and there are hundreds of tutorials ranging from beginner to very advanced on youtube and dozens of other sites which can all be found on google. Besides that it is extremely easy to use to begin with. After you have modeled an object or character you then import it with unity and the game logic (scripting), etc. is added.

I would definitely check out Maya or 3ds Max. I personally use 3ds Max for most of my projects because of the really useful plugins for it. Either of these is almost $2000 a license though, but are available for free if you are a student.
