You are on the right track. Marching cubes is dependent on you knowing which of the blocks surrounding the current block are filled or not filled. ( just like the mesh optimization on the Voxels to start with). The marching cubes actually sit 0.5 above the current surface, so they aren’t flat. Each point on the surface will give a series of polygons that will approximate what lies outside the current cube.

I would tackle this by converting the 256 combinations of how those cubes form into polygon data for that individual cube. So all you will have to do is to convert the blocks on the outside to a byte. Then just call the polygon list for that byteset and add it to your geometry.

That byteset will need to be zero based. So you simply add the location of the voxel * the voxel size + the byteset vertex information * the voxel size. This gives you the infromation for each block in the cube.

What your task is, is to convert the original 16 cubes by the 8 possible rotations that it could be, then figure out which of the polygon sets you need.

Alternatively, you could simply build the 16 cubes as described, then build the 256 combinations with cube pointer and rotational data. You then just multiply the cube * the rotational data to get your vertex and polygon information.

None of it is simple, but in the end, you will have something you can be proud of.
