I started a thread yesterday, but messed up a lot in it, so I thought I’d start fresh!
I’m working on a summer project at the moment, Marines Online. It’s also offline, but the main focus of it is online play. The game’s set in modern day, with a slight twist to realistic graphics. It’s not too cartoon, nor is it insanely real.
I spent 3 days working on a model, which you can see in my other thread, and decided that, in simple terms, looked rubbish! So I started again today, here’s my result of around 3 hours work! Some areas aren’t textured yet, as you can see by the white patches, but I’ll get that done tonight.
Ratings, comments are welcome. Try keep the trolling to a minimum though…
or if your a student you can get the free 3 year maya student thing. but you cant sell the game. unless you know how to get around the system which i dont normally recommend.
I have all the programs listed above. But in my opinion, sketchup creates the best results. I’m not particularly bothered if people think it’s un-accomplish able, I set myself the target which I will complete.
Besides, It doesn’t matter how “Professional” you do it, or what program you use to complete it, It’s all about the final piece. My choice is to use Sketchup, and I will be using Sketchup…
While you get fast results in Sketchup that don’t look totally crap, it is a useless modelling-program for games. Your “final piece” will not be optimized at all. Sketchup is (and the name implies it) for fast sketches and block outs (and maybe for architecture)…not for actual gamemodels.
Just an advice
@Schlumpfsack - I don’t expect anything great from this - I’m only 16 so I’m learning at the moment. Finally converted myself to C# for the coding side though, that’s helped.
@Asse - Thanks for the advice, but like I said, I’m not looking to create a AAA game, just a simple FPS really
Helps Alot and he has tons of more tuts on all sorts of modeling things very easy to follow and fun! try it out and subscribe for he has done a good job.
from a user of sketchup i will tell you that you need to right click on the desired pannel and then go to texture then position and then drag it out until the size you like. dont completely disregard sketchup it has been used early in AAA titles.
Thanks DJ, will check it out now. I’ve done animation in blender before, but I just feel Sketchup is easier for architecture, especially simplistic designs like that. I’ll use it for creating my characters, I think…
You post asking our comments and opinions and when the majority of the thread (whom are correct btw) mentioned the sketchup is not an actual modeling program and shouldn’t be used to design video games… you responded with “My choice is to use Sketchup, and I will be using Sketchup”. This isn’t a troll-post, don’t misconstrue me, but if you’re not willing to make necessary changes or take extremely good advice (switch to Maya, Blender or 3DSM) then what is the purpose of telling you our opinion? So far I’ve seen no effort on your part to make necessary changes to better yourself, so unless you’re willing to change your attitude in that sense you won’t find many people that want to keep trying to help.
Also, for my word of advice - this is your first game, make an FPS, but don’t try to make an Online FPS… keep it basic. In fact, an FPS game (my opinion) shouldn’t even be your first game at all, but a lot of people wanting to be game designers refuse to start at the basics so they pretty much “met halfway” in a sense. You ‘should’ start with games such as Pong, or Tetris. Just my .02
